Ferndale is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 32,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Ferndale was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a city in 1868. The name "Ferndale" comes from the French word "feuille" meaning blade or edge, and was given to it by General John Custer during his march through this area on his way to battle against Sitting Bull on July 29, 1876. The city's rich history can be found throughout its downtown core which has been restored over time including a half-mile (800 m) wide strip of plank walkway that ran along the banks of the Grand River between Main Street and Seventh Avenue until 1962. In addition to its downtown core, there are several other districts within the city limits that include: First Ward (southwest corner of Main and Elm Streets), Second Ward (northwest corner of Main and State streets), Third Ward ( northeast corner of Elm and State streets), Fourth Ward (southeast corner of Elm and State streets), Fifth Ward (northwest corner of Elm and Gratiot Streets), Sixth Ward (southwest Corner of Elm Street and Park Avenue NW) The late 1800s were a time when fernery became an important center for aluminum production due to its location near two major smelters operated by Alcoa. After World War II, fernery declined as aluminum production increased; however, it regained some importance following enactment by President George H W Bush in 2000 of the America Recovery Act which led to new investment in fernery infrastructure around the country. In recent years physical activity levels have decreased significantly due to lack thereof available funding for replacements or renovation projects however cultural activities continue TODD across many aspects such as music performance/theater events art exhibits etc.; these days Ferndale remains one of largest Midwestern cities with an active nightlife scene dating back more than 100 years

Ferndale was founded in 1836 by John Ferndale and his brother-in-law, Samuel Morse. The town was named for General George Washington's commander in the American Revolution, Nathanael Greene. The brothers started a flour mill and a sawmill. In 1838, they built a grist mill and a blacksmith shop. Ferndale became an important trading center during the 1840s because of its access to natural resources such as lumber and coal. In 1847, the Ferndales built a schoolhouse and began to build churches and other structures. In 1865, the town became part of Lansing Township when it was organized.
