Ferndale, Michigan is a small town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint metropolitan area. Ferndale was founded on November 1, 1824 by George Washington Carrol and others as a small farmstead on the east bank of the Menominee River. The town became an agricultural center and developed into a bedroom community for Flint. Ferndale lost its role as a bedroom community when other towns in the area grew larger; however, it has continued to attract people from Flint due to its inexpensive housing and close proximity to major highways. The history of Ferndale began with George Washington Carrol who established the first store in town on December 12, 1824. Other early settlers included Elijah Bicknell (1827-1901), Wm Haines (1829-1890), John Fenton (baptized October 10th 1830), James Covington (1832-1910), Jno Bosworth (baptized February 26th 1830) and Ebenezer Cooks (born January 4th 1835). In 1870, fernery had a population of 2200 residents and was one of several hundred communities in Washtenaw County that responded toMichigan's request for land grant certificates during what became known asthe Great Migration. On July 3rd 1870, commissioners from Saginaw Bay Company met at Fernery to award parcels totaling 156 acres located along what is now Woodward Avenue to approved claimants who would build homes thereon or sell them back to those granting certificates for $300 per acre not including title insurance premiums which totaled $4 per home! The first houses were built on three lots that were donated by Ebenezer Cooks; these lots comprised today’s Main Street between Clinton Boulevard and Huron Street/Route 52 intersection. Of note are two contributing buildings - One being an early frame church built about 1872 which still stands seen from Main Street; and another frame house also standing today which housed the post office until it closed in 1972 . In 1901, fernery had a population of 5000 residents but declined due largely to development outside of town caused by increased investment opportunities within Flint while fernery struggled with World War I munitions production shortages caused by numerous detachments stationed throughout America without corresponding adequate housing developmentsavailability! In 1925-1926 when Chrysler Corporation purchased Pontiac Motor Company’s US car factory in Auburn Hills Michigan they commissioned Detroit architect Edward Loyd Wright Jr., together with his brother Louis Loyd Wright IIIto design new plants on White Road east side of Operations Building adjacentproperty then leased back by Chrysler Corp... This project called for enlarging Factory Buildings existing structures were torn down creating over 4000 jobs.... When First Ford plant opened up just west side main street lot #2 went for sale.. Blacksmith shop adjoining lot #1 sold immediately.. Pickle Jar & Co store across road from factory went out of business soon afterwards... By 1930 all operations at Fernery were relocated inside present day Development Headquarters building where they remain till this day ! During World War II much effort was put into developing makeshift housing units near factories rather than rely on purchasing individual dwellings thereby saving millions sterling dollars!! However many citizens chose instead not take part in government sanctioned relocation camps set up throughout central Michigans rural areas because their families felt pressureto leave their struggling hometown! With limited resources available after war ended farmers turned their attention once again towards agriculture becoming one of Ferndale’s most important industries accounting for almost 50%of GDP through 2009 according to US Census Bureau data... After years long struggle Rice Farms bought Ferrydale Rd property next door from local farmer Joe Kapp(now deceased)in 1990 leasing it back over 20 years later becoming sole owner resultingin plans To redevelop property starting around 2001 thru 2013 With initial goal being 17 thousand new housing units!!! The current plan calls for redevelopment including 3000 more apartments!!!
