Ferndale is one of the most important cities in Michigan, and its history can be traced back to 1835. At that time, Ferndale was a small town on the banks of the Rouge River. It was known as a place where farmers could sell their crops and view the surrounding countryside. In 1851, Ferndale became a town charter city. In 1912, it became a part of Lansing. In 1925, Ferndale became an incorporated city again. The population has grown steadily over the years, reaching over 100,000 by 2000. Today, Ferndale is home to many cultural attractions such as the Art Institute of Michigandiana and Flint Hills Museum of Art; as well as major businesses including Ford Motor Company and Kellogg Foods Company.

Ferndale, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Kent County. The population was 7,540 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of Cadillac Township, within Oakland County. The first European settler in Ferndale was James Shockey in 1824. The town was platted in 1846 by Nicholas Jourdain and named for General Lafayette, who had died during the American Revolution that year. After Presley's visit to Ferndale on April 25, 1901, Ferndale became one of his favorite stops during his Midwest tour that took him from Chicago through Detroit and then down to Muskegon Heights before ending up in Grand Rapids for a night at the Dunes casino on July 4th. In 1957, Ferndale became home to the world's largest watermelon research experiment when United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service scientist Drs.-Edwin Eberhard and Irving Bache set up a 3-acre (1-hectare) fieldeming operation near what is now downtown with over 1 million watermelons grown under controlled conditions between 1951 and 1957 by way ofradio broadcasts from a transmitter on an antenna atop an abandoned building located just east of downtown In 1977 it also became home to America's first successful artificial root canal operation which was conducted by University Of Michigan professor Donald Kiser using four blocks of synthetic coralroot taken from a shipment sent downriver by naval lieutenant Charles Hoeght
