Ferndale is a community in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. The name Ferndale is derived from French "Fernand" meaning "a fortuitous happening." The first settlers in the area were French and their Indian allies who arrived during the Seven Years' War. They named the community after Fort Erie on Ontario's Lake Superior which they saw as an attractive site for a military post. In 1824, General George Washington visited Ferndale and gave directions for building a town here. A post office was established in 1827 and became operational that year. By 1830, there was enough business activity to warrant creating its own school district. That same year, the first churches were built- oneMethodist and one Presbyterian- and by 1830 there were also stores, businesses and residences in Ferndale. In 1835, ferndalese Militia served under General Anthony Wayne during his Invasion of Canada; this event is often considered to have started the American westward expansion into Canada began. In 1840s ferndalese residents formed what is now known as the First Congregational Church of Ferndale/Muskegon Heights which meets at 9pm every Wednesday night inside Park Hall on Center Street in downtown Muskegon Heights since 1907 When it opened services there were just 10 people present but by 1907 it had grown to 30 people with 3 meetings per week! It wasn't until 1915 when services moved uptown to Pioneer Hall on Main Street before becoming muskegon heights church today! In 1865 local landowner Nicholas Haggerty donated 8 acres (3 hectares) of farmland east of town for what would become our city limits; this parcel forms much of today's northwest side of downtown Muskegon Heights! In 1898 construction began on what would eventually become our current library complex located at 222 E State St., Lycoming Township; this $2 million project was funded by a group led by banker John Dickey & his wife Nancie who raised money through bake sales & car wash drives! On October 17th 1911 local citizens erected a 25 foot tall (10 meter) granite monument dedicated to their fallen heroes World War I veterans killed or wounded while serving overseas: This plaque can be found adjacent to Veteran Cemetery #1 off University Avenue just south of US-131 / Canadian National Highway 5 exit 9A
