Ferndale, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Port Huron area of Western Michigan. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The town has a history dating back to 1836. It was founded by George Harger and his family on the banks of the Mecosta River. Ferndale became a resort town in the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the St. Clair River. In recent years, Ferndale has become an agricultural center with a focus on corn, soybeans, and other crops. The first settler in what is now Ferndale was George Harger who arrived from Ohio in 1836. He built a cabin near present day Depot Street and started ferrying goods between Detroit and Kalamazoo. By 1840, Harger had married Mary Beattie and moved west to what is now Township 10 east of present day Ferndale Road (now US 231). They were followed by three more families: John Beattie in 1841; James Sweeny in 1843; and Isaac Nelsen in 1850. All but Nelsen left when gold was discovered at Comstock Lode near Battle Creek during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When America's first railroad arrived through that area in 1868, people saw an opportunity for transportation to market their products inland rather than shipping them across Lake Huron or downriver all the way to Chicago via steamboats or stagescoops. The Ferndale Railway opened up business for farmers along Depot Street as well as providing access to new markets such as Marquette County (now Holland) on one side of the river while Battle Creek stretched across another side with landowning businesses relocating from downtown Detroit towards rural areas such as this one where they could control access to raw materials needed for making things like textiles and shoes that consumers would then buy direct from producers instead of going through middlemen like merchants such as Sears & Roebuck who offered prices higher than those charged by local farmers production-wise but also carried risks associated with Third World conditions like disease which could impact consumer demand if not managed well ferndale_MI
Ferndale is a city in and the county seat of Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ferndale were French fur traders in 1673. The first permanent settler in what is now Ferndale was James Armstrong in 1837. In 1840, John Nicholson set up a sawmill here and became one of the early settlers of Ferndale Township. A post office called "Napperville" was established in 1847, but it failed to take off and was discontinued in 1849. In 1861, when Michigan became a state, Ferndale became its capital; however, the capital remained Washtenaw City until 1959 when it moved to Lansing. In 1863–64 treasurer for each congressional district Alexander Gardner offered US$10 per acre for land on which he proposed to build a new courthouse and jail (but this offer was not accepted). The site chosen for the building actually served as an arsenal during World War I because it had good access to water from two tributaries ofthe Grand River which flowed through town center. In 1865–67 Isaac Sibley built a gristmill on the north side of town; this mill remains operational today as Sibley's Mill & Grist Mill LLC., also known as simply Sibley's Mill or simply "Sibley." One result of this milling activity was that ferrochrome ore began being processing into pig iron here at about this time also - giving rise to what is now known as "ferrendale Ironclad". The first store opened here in 1870 by Wm Ladd & Bros.; it closed soon after due to competition from nearby Dearborn Heights stores! In 1876 Halleck & Company started selling hardware from their store on Main Street opposite Sibley's Mill; they continued doing so until 1907! After Halleck's death circa 1907 another hardware store proprietor named George Fenton opened up at 4010 Woodward Avenue (now Woodward Avenue South) where he continued stocking Hardware until his death 1938!
