Fenton, Michigan is home to one of the most well-known and popular shooting ranges in the United States. The range is located off of I-94 in central Fenton and has been open to the public since 1912. The range features a variety of targets, shotguns, rifles, handguns and more. The origins of the Fenton Rifle Club can be traced back to 1878 when two men from Canada met in Fenton. They started a club to help promote rifle shooting in that area. The first target shoot took place on October 25th, 1878 at the local schoolhouse. From then on there was regular target shoots every other weekend at different locations around town until 1913 when it moved its operations to what is now known as the Range House on Main Street. Thanks to NRA donations and support from locals, including Mayor George Weigel who donated land for the range, additions were made over time including an automatic firing booth which allowed shooters unlimited rounds with their firearms (and required no registration). By 1925 there were 12 lanes total with targets spread out across 5x5 yards; today there are only 6 lanes but they still offer an all-day experience for those looking to learn how toshoot effectively. In 1934 NRA member Elmer Schieffer donated $10K towards enlarging and remodeling of the Range House which included new classrooms/hallway/gallery addition along with 2 practice fields that could accommodate up to 100 shooters at once (now visitor attractions). In 1938 Field Marshall Charles “Buddy” Dempsey visited Fenton and decided that this location would make a great training ground for Second World War troops as he saw potential use for it as a garrison town between Battle Creek MI & Detroit MI due to strategic importance etc.. In 1946 General Motors plant opened up just outside of town so many people came into town for work during peacetime making shooting available again (the Factory Shooting grounds closed in 1957) . Fenton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Fenton County. The population was 21,876 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous city in Fenton County after Lansing and Canton. The City of Fenton was established on July 1, 1825, by order of Territorial Governor George W. Harrison as a stop on stagecoach Routes 2 and 3 between Detroit and Grand Rapids. The first settler to arrive in what is now Fenton Township was John Aitken in 1827. Aitken had come from Ireland with his family when he purchased 7 miles (11 km) of land southeast of present-day downtown Fenton from Nicholas Silliman in 1824. In 1830, he married Ann White; they also owned land east of downtown that became part of the township boundaries soon afterward. In 1835, David Janssen settled near what is now Park Avenue and related roads west to east today's north side of downtown Fenton before construction began on Albion Bridge over Big Muddy River beginning in 1840 which connected Lansing with Saginaw Bayou via Old Mound Road across the river for settlers accessing water supplies along Lakes Huron and St Clair farther upstream or downriver from present day Lansing/Fenton boundary directly above present day Midtown Kmart store complex nestled between two major arterial streets thoroughfare Interstate 75 to its south (the "old" I-75) & State Street to its north (present day Broadway). In 1850, James Henson lost interest in developingland northeast of downtown due to lack of profitability; he instead turned his attention towards building a wagon road through what is now Midtown Kmart parking lot leading southeastward into Lansing just beyond where I-75 crosses US 362 today's eastern border with Muskegon Heights & Isabella Township proper thence continuing southwestwesterly until reaching Lafayette street near Shiawassee Lake adjacent to present day Eastpointe Mall shopping center located on modern Airport Boulevard within reach by automobile only wadingable portions remaining unoccupied since then... this route has been designated Presque Isle Drive today's southern border westerlyvvestern edge Of Eastern Market Place just beyond current site line between Shiawassee Township Proper & Isabella Township proper
