The town is named after Fenton Township, Michigan. The first people to live in what is now Fenton were of French and Indian descent. In 1814, John Fenton and his family moved from Stonington, Connecticut to what is now Fenton Township. They were the first permanent residents of the township and built a log cabin on some land they purchased from the Hurons. In 1836, Judge George Washington Smith (1807-1886) organized what are now Washtenaw County into an area west of Detroit known as Washtenaw County. He chose Fenton as its county seat because it had been a part of Shiawassee Township for more than two centuries and because it was then one of the largest towns in that region. In 1848, when Michigan became a state, Fenton became part of Grand Rapids District #2 which was then made up of Shiawassee and Ottawa Counties east of Detroit. In 1868, when Grand Rapids District #1 was divided into four districts - including Washtenaw County - grandrapids decided that Fenton should be in district 2 because it had more inhabitants than any other community within that district. Today’s downtown area near State Street and Western Avenue developed around churches (St Joseph’s Catholic Church at 5th & Western Avenue; First Baptist Church at 6th & State Street; Methodist EpiscopalChurch at 9th & Western Avenue), banks (First National Bank at 12th & State Street), schools (Davey Memorial High School at 10th & Union Ave.), businesses (J&R Donelson Chevrolet), government buildings (Michigan Capitol Building) and services (Lansing Metro Police Department).
