Fenton, Michigan is a small town in the Midwestern United States that is part of the Lansing-based MPS district. The population was 6,890 at the 2010 census. The core of Fenton lies on the east side of town and extends into the Township of Sterling Heights to the west. The early history of Fenton can be traced back to 1795 when land was sold for settlement by John Fenton and his wife Anne. In 1837, two brothers named Moses and Levi Mortimer bought 1,500 acres (60 hectares) from John Fenton. They laid out what would become known as Fenton Township on a map prepared by Joshua Goad in 1838. It was an agricultural community with homes made from logs and earth built around a central square. In 1849, American Civil War veteran Isaac Dodge donated 2,000 acres (900 hectares) to the township for schools and churches. A year later, Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in what would become known as Dodge Park on that property. The first school in Fenton opened in 1861–62; it was called First Republican School but soon became known as McKinley School after President Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Lansing that year. Fenton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Macomb County. The population was 39,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fenton was founded by Captain John Fenton on December 12, 1814 as a trading post on the Grand River between Detroit and Warren, Michigan Territory. Fenton was named for General James Wilkinson Fenton who led American forces into battle against Spanish troops at Cerro Gordo in 1813 during the Mexican-American War. The city's first mayor was Moulton Marston and its first schoolmaster was Ebenezer Cooke from 1817 to 1830. In 1824, Fenton became an incorporated village with a millinery business as its only industry and a post office called "The Grove" opened that year. A public works project began in 1830 to improve water transportation available through the town and it grew quickly into one of Michigan's most important cities due to its location on two major rivers: the Grand River and Lake Erie which helped it become self-sufficient in food production and trade within its borders. By 1840, when British soldiers burned down part of town during their raids into what is now Dearborn Heights, they had destroyed much of what made Fenton such an important center within local commerce but also left behind valuable architectural examples that are still extant today including several churches (the Anglican St Michael's Episcopal Church dating back to 1888) as well as buildings such as Masonic Temple No 9 (built in 1898), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1890), Post Office Building No 3 (1896) and State Capitol building built between 1902-1905 following efforts by Mayor Hiram Sibley to have a permanent government presence in downtown Fenton from which all branches of government could be represented without having to move from their original homes or send messengers throughout downtown; all three were razed following World War II however nearby First National Bank building has been preserved since then In 1927, Municipal Court Judge Crampton moved his family from Cleveland Heights – where he had been practicing law since 1906 – to live permanently in present day Macomb County after his death leaving his practice there vacant for more than 25 years In 1907, entrepreneur Augustus Ewing donated land northwest of downtown for municipal purposes with plans for development including housing, schools, shopping malls etc., but little progress was made until 1962 when casino mogul George Fisher purchased approximately 60 acres adjacent to Second Avenue South between Alger Road/Grosse Pointe Boulevard - now Opryland Center -and Ionia Parkway eastward making it possible for him finally build what would eventually become known as “Fisher’s Palace” becoming one of Americas most luxurious casinos ever constructed A new fire hall/emergency services station was built just east of Second Avenue South between Alger Road/Grosse Pointe Boulevard - now Opryland Center -and Ionia Parkway eastward near Interstate 75 creating another major economic boost while also causing some inconvenience due to traffic congestion caused by construction work going on concurrently along Second Avenue South motorists must take alternate routes either via Third Street north or Fourth Street south depending upon their route choice which can cause long delays outside Casino Zone areas
