In 1892, Fenton, Michigan resident and inventor George Stephenson developed an optical instrument that became known as the "Stromboli." The Stromboli was a device consisting of a pair of lenses placed so that they blended together to create an image. Fenton is a small town in the Huron County, Michigan area. Its population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is located on Fenton Peninsula on the northeast shore of Lake Erie. The community began as a small hamlet called "Fenton Township" in 1834 and became a village in 1881. It was named after John Fenton, an early settler and collector of land in the area. The community grew rapidly during World War II when many local residents enlisted in the military or worked for production plants that were closed due to war-time shortages. Many homes were built on land bought from the government for this purpose. After the war, many new families arrived, most of whom had no experience with farming or living near water. The growth of Fenton slowed during the 1960s and 1970s as people shifted from manufacturing to service and professional jobs elsewhere in Michigan. However, recent growth has seen much development around downtown Fenton and along Utopia Drive which runs through the heart of town. Today, Fenton is home to a variety of businesses including several restaurants, two banks (one large national bank and one smaller regional bank), four post offices (two countywide), three elementary schools (four grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade), one middle school (grades 9-12), two churches (Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints -Angels And DemonsNikki's Pizza & Wings - operated by The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints) and two golf courses - both belonging to private clubs who lease their equipment from state government entities such as Midland Hills Golf Club LLC., whose members include various governors throughout Michigan; Tom Brady Academy; Saginaw Valley State University; West Point Military Academy; Maryville College School of Nursing &Midwifery; Methodist Health Services Inc.; Lighthouse Christian School - Sacred Heart Catholic School); five clinics - four within walking distance of downtown: St Joseph's Healthcare System; Mercy Health Care Center/St Luke’s Medical Center/Mohawk Memorial Hospital( Sisters In Action Clinic ); Holy Cross Hospitals( Ann Arbor Women’s Clinic ); Lutheran General Hospital ; Allina HealthCare Facility Fenton also has its own harbor with boat ramps available for disembarking passengers coming into or leaving lake Erie
