Gun targets are a part of history in Fenton, Michigan. The first target to be shot at in the town was a blacksmith’s shop that was located on Main Street. On July 3, 1881, Fenton residents got together to shoot at a small woodcock that had flown into the window of the store. It was the first time anyone in Fenton had evershot at a bird. The town gradually began to grow and become an important center for hunting and shooting. In 1895, Fenton hosted its first national rifle championships and Winners Lane became one of the most popular areas for target shooting in America. Over the years, there have been many different types of targets available for shooters to use including deer, pigeons, shotguns, handguns and more. Fenton, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 23,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metropolitan area. Fenton has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 4,000 years and is one of the oldest continuously occupied places in America. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fenton were French fur traders in 1795-1796 when they followed the Kawkawken River to its mouth on Lake Huron. They named this place "Fencourt" after Admiral de Suffren who had commanded their unit during that expedition under Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. Captain Nathaniel Taylor explored this area in 1802 while serving with General Anthony Wayne's brigade under Major General Adam Woolley and named it for him, James Fenton (1775-1857). In 1814, US troops burned down Fort Dearborn as part of a military campaign against Tecumseh's Rebellion which began several days earlier in Fort Dearborn on October 14th. For much of his life James Fenton was an advocate for agricultural development within Muskegon County due to its strategic location between Detroit and Grand Rapids as well as its natural resources such as limestone, copper and sandstone which he believed could be used to build railroads connecting these two cities and beyond In 1827 – just prior to his death – JF donated land comprising most of present day Muskegon Heights east of I-94 (Mt Pleasant Road) to create what would become known today as Holy Cross Cemetery where many people including Henry Ford are buried In 1854 Canadian Pacific Railroad purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) south from current Mt Pleasant Rd along modern M-102 on what became known as CP Rail Road Avenue from original Township boundaries established in 1800 by commissioners appointed by George Washington . This purchase included lands adjacent to present day Holy Cross Cemetery . The railroad built a track through our cemetery opening it to passengers and traffic on July 5th 1860 while we were still underprivileged Indian burial ground During World War II both bombing raids against Hiroshima took place over Muskegon Heights residents were aware thatGerman bombers were headed towards their homes but no warning was given either local newspapers or radio stations
Fenton was a small town in Michigan until the late 1800s. The town was founded by Fenton Township, which was organized on November 3, 1837. Fenton is located in Washtenaw County and had a population of around 2,000 people at the time of its incorporation. The first post office in Fenton opened on December 12, 1838. The first store in Fenton was built by George Wickersham and operated from a wagon shop on Main Street. The business closed around 1840 due to low sales. In 1861, the community gained notoriety when it became the location of the Battle of Fort Wayne during the American Civil War. Union troops burned down part of the town after capturing it from Confederate forces
