Fenton, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 77,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fenton Township was John Fenton, who arrived on July 8, 1800 from Holland with his family and three cows. He named his new township after himself and built a log cabin near present-day Wixom on the Red Lake River. In 1805, he married Sarah Ladd and founded a small tavern in what is now downtown Fenton to serve travelers along the Muskegon River Bridge road. In 1827, David Ford moved his family to what would become Fenton Township from Dearborn Heights on the east side of Detroit and began trading goods with Native Americans living along Lakes Huron and Superior. Over time, Ford's descendants developed dairy farming here as well as lumbering interests in nearby Brush Creek Township (now part of Wayne County). In 1837, an act by Congress created Oakland County out of parts of Wayne and Macomb counties; Fenton was one of its first townships. The township had a total population of only 20 people when it became chartered that year; within 10 years it had grown to nearly 100 residents due to increased trade with other counties in western Michigan Territory (the region now made up largely by metro Detroit). Fenton's growth continued into the 19th century; during this period it annexed portions of Brush Creek Township (now part of Wayne County) as well as parts of adjacent Oakland County until its annexation total reached 137 people by 1880. This rapid growth led to land speculation and development problems which were eventually solved through public works projects including numerous streetcar lines connecting various neighborhoods throughout town – making Fenton one Of The Most Developed Cities In Michigan During That Era! Fenton is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,596 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Wayne County. The name "Fenton" was given to the entire town by Augustus Fenton in 1847 when he donated land to the township. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first school was built in 1857. The present day downtown district was developed as a shopping center in the early 1960s after massive growth within then-incipient Fenton Township. In 1936, Fenton became an official city and adopted its current form with streets named for prominent citizens such as Judge Royce Ladd and Mayor Milton Sievers. In 1978, it merged with neighboring Lewiston to form what is now Lewiston-Fenton Township (although some residents still refer to themselves as "Fenton"). The merger resulted in many businesses moving from one township into another over time which has led to some confusion among residents about their municipal status; however, all municipalities within Wayne County are subject to state law governing City/Township boundaries. The current mayor of Fenton is Paula Boggs who took office on January 1st of 2019
