In 1847, when Detroit became a city, much of what is now Muskegon Heights became part of Detroit; however, most of what is now Fenton remained rural until after World War II when many farmers moved into urban areas for work in factories or service jobs during the Great Migration. After World War II ended, many farms closed down and some residents left to take up other opportunities while others transferred to nearby Flint or Holland MI for similar opportunities available there during that time period. In 1957 it was announced that plans were underway to move the county seat from Grand Rapids tomuskegon because Grand Rapids had become too large for its population and services could no longer keep up with growth within Muskegonaiskellew Township which bordered it eastward on three sides while agriculture continued to be an important economicstay within municipal boundaries well into recent times Despite opposition from local politicians including then-Mayor Clarence Youngbloods who felt that moving would reduce infrastructure spending withinMuskegonaiskllew Township he prevailed over objections from other officials including then-County Executive Joseph Kapp before finally approving plans for move which took place on October 15th 1957 with only minor disruption caused by protesters numbering about 50 who chose not to leave their homes once they learned about the impending relocation

However, some residents decided to stay and continue their agriculture operations or remain active within the community during this time period by founding various organizations including: local business associations; religious groups; fraternal orders; and educational institutions such as a high school and two colleges (Western Michigan University - now Wayne State University) which were later merged into one university in 2003. In recent years there has been an increase in development situated near downtown Fenton which has led to job creation for residents along with new retail options being available closer to shoppers who are increasingly looking for smaller towns that have quality restaurants within walking distance rather than massive shopping malls where everything can be bought online these days!

The name "Fenton" was first given to this area by French missionaries in 1812 while they were establishing a fur trading post on what is now M-1 Route 67 near present day Midland Township
