Additionally, numerous other heritage buildings have been preserved such as: The Barton Theatre opened in 1922 as one of only two movie theaters west of Chicago that showed feature films before they were outlawed by Hollywood; A local bank building constructed between 1915-1920 remains one of Fenton's most significant landmarks; and an old hospital that served as both a mental hospital and general hospital during World War I remain housed within City Hall complex today (now known as Midtown Health Services). As one of America's "rust belt" cities, Fenton has seen some hard times over the years but has slowly regained lost jobs and population due to migration into neighboring townships or out-migration to other parts of Michigan or Illinois over recent decades. However, given its rich cultural heritage and economy which continues to grow, there are strong plans underway for revitalization throughout all aspects including Mayor David Stowe's plan for developing four large retail districts totaling more than 1 million square feet across three blocks within Downtown area - encompassing many restaurants, shops, hotels & bars - with hopes that this will attract new business investment while preserving much older commercial property within district boundaries for future generations to enjoy.
