In 1886, Augustus Keyes established his own barrel-making business called Keyes Bros., which became one of the largest gun barrel manufacturers in America. Keyes Manufacturing Company produced rifle barrels, shotgun barrels, handguns and other firearms products for local dealers and consumers until 1997 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Foods Incorporated (WFC). At WFC they continued producing firearm products under the name of Winchester Firearms Corporation until 2001 when it merged with Remington Arms Corp to form Remington Rand Corporation (RR). From then on all product titles were changed to simply "Remington". Today Remington Rand Corporation produces all sorts of firearms including hunting rifles, shotguns and pistols

The first permanent white settlers arrived in what is now Fenton on November 5, 1817 when John Hull and his family set out from Detroit for Fort Recovery on the Grand Traverse Bay area today's Holland Landing Road. The Hulls were followed by other pioneers in 1818 when George Stephenson founded Huron City on Ottawa Street between Woodward Avenue and Main Street to serve as a trading post for fur traders and Native Americans across central Michigan Territory. The settlement was abandoned after a few months due to harassment by Indian natives, but it was re-established two years later as the town of Georgetown (named after Georgetown County), which became an outpost on Grand Traverse Bay with access to Michigan's south side via navigation channels through Georgian Bay. In 1830, Georgetown merged with neighboring village of Batavia to form what would become known as Fenton Township (later renamed Muskegon Heights).
