Farmington Hills, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Farmington Hills was George Washington Carver who arrived in 1837. He founded a grocery store and later sold land to other settlers including James W. Nichols and his brother-in-law John A. Macdonald. In 1850, Farmington Hills became a village when it merged with neighboring Stroudsburg Township. In 1861, the village formed its own school board which included five residents from Farmington Hills: Edwin Hemenway (president), Nathaniel Swayne (securities manager), John Davenport (land commissioner), Moses Brown (builder) and Joseph Kapp (lumberjacker). The first school building was erected on Fourth Street between Belle Isle Avenue and Woodward Avenue in 1862. During World War I, Farmington Hills served as an ammunition dump for the Battle of Paris which took place near the town on November 11–12, 1918. After the war ended, it resumed its role as an agricultural center with an increase in output from cheese production beginning in 1922 thanks to improvements made by Arthur Winterbottom of West Bloomfield Township (). In 1954, Farmingdale School District #1 merged into Washtenaw County School District #2 and then into Oakland County School District #3; however,Farmington Hills retained its own school board until 1959 when it became a part of Washtenaw Heights Consolidated School District #5; however again following mergers all schools within Washtenaw Heights were consolidated into one district effective December 1st 1961 known as "Farmington Hills Community Schools". On September 25th of that year came another merger resulting in "Hillsboro Township Schools" being established with seven schools - three high schools (Homeschooling Academy Charter High School [now Highland Park Middle/High], Eastside High School & Southview Intermediate Campus] & four middle/grades high schools - Allendale Middle/HighSchool [now Harbor View], Brighton Senior HighSchool [now Dearborn OpenSpring Academy], Dexter Senior HighSchool [now Grosse Pointe North HS], RiverfordSenior HighSchool[now Arlington Heights HS]. On October 15th 1983 Homecoming Weekend led to unification of township high school's under one banner effective immediately called "Hillsboro Community Schools" after then Superintendent Driscoll announced that this would be how things will operate at all our districts going forward! This decision saved us from becoming two separate districts like much has been said previously about our school system... We are now one district!
