The city of Farmington Hills was founded on December 12, 1927 by William Ahern and his brother John Hutton as a result of land purchases from the estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The first store opened in what is now Detroit Avenue and Woodward Avenue. In 1951, Ford Motor Company purchased all of farmington Hills for $27 million making it one of Ford's largest acquisitions outside North America at that time. The company built numerous factories within the city limits over the years including Ford Pinto Assembly Plant (1958), Dearborn Automotive Parts Plant (1959), Oldsmobile Division (1963) and most recently Grand Rapids Auto Factory (2007). Farmington Hills is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 61,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third largest city in Michigan and the fifth-largest city east of Chicago. The name "Farmington" comes from the Ojibwe word for "headwaters," which refers to several small coves near the central business district. The first permanent settler in Farmington Hills was Ebenezer Emerson, who purchased land north of downtown on July 1, 1837. Emerson's son John prolonged his father's purchase, purchasing additional land to the south and west of his original holdings between 1839 and 1840. By 1850, all of Farmington Hills had been purchased by various individuals or groups for rural development purposes; only a few tracts remained unincorporated. In 1851–53, work began on building what would become State Capitol Building on North Main Street (now West Adams Boulevard). Work stopped due to lack of funding but resumed in 1861 under new leadership including Albert Spaak and James Mott. In 1865 David Noyes bought 150 acres () northeast of town from Darius Warner; this became Noyes Park (later renamed Midtown Detroit) with its own shopping mall and other amenities today. Noyes donated much of this land – as well as some parcels still undeveloped – to help build Wayne State University’s campus in Eastpointe Township (). By 1870, large blocks had been developed around City Hall along Woodward Avenue (the present day Grand River Avenue), further west on Dearborn Street (), east on Maple Road (), and north along Kalamazoo Avenue (). This area now forms downtown: most notably North Campus Plaza (), home to Wayne State University since 1913 (); One Financial Place (); Bank Michigan (); Staples Center (); Northwest Landmark Museum (); Ford Motor Company ; as well as many apartment complexes., such as Farmsall Towers (), Bloomfield Towers (), South Campus Plaza () & Tower II (). The first post office opened in Farmington Hills on November 12, 1872; it moved from its original location at 9th and Elm Streets (). The current Post Office Annex building was completed in 1957 adjacent to State Capitol Building - making it one of few buildings remaining from pre-state capitol days that still stands today within downtown Farmington Hills! Named after General George Washington because he donated $10K towards founding WSU's School Of Medicine - farmINGTONHills Medical Center opened its doors October 1st 2009 across from WSU's main campus!
