The town of Farmington was founded in 1836 by Joshua Botkin and others as a small cluster of log cabins on the north side of what is now Woodward Avenue. Over time it grew to include a few hundred residents and four stores. In 1871, the community became an incorporated village when it amalgamated with other nearby towns: Dearborn Heights, Houghton Township, and West Bloomfield Township. In 1907, Farmington Hills annexed parts of neighboring Troy Township (now Walled City). By 1960 there were over 4,000 people living in Farmington Hills. In 1965, Farmington Hills made national headlines when it became one of the first cities to enact affirmative action policies for citizens applying for city services such as police officers or firemen. At that time black and Hispanic citizens were considered separate races and were not allowed to apply together for certain positions without receiving preferential treatment. This policy remains in place today; today black and Hispanic residents are both considered individuals and are not counted towards totals for city services such as police officers or firemen

It is the seventh-largest city in Michigan and the second-largest on the Detroit–Windsor Corridor after Detroit. The city proper has a population of 62,636 as of 2018. Farmington Hills is one of two cities in Wayne County with a population over 100,000 (the other being Dearborn). The first settlement in what is now Farmington Hills was made up of families that moved from Scioto County, Ohio, to start a new life in what would become Michigan Territory during the early 1800s. In 1837, James Wintney organized 8 farmers into an association to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) of land north of present day Ford Road and east of Lake Huron for $2 per acre ($30 000 Today). This land became known as "Wintney's Purchase." When it became clear that territory would be divided among Canada and America following their War for Independence, Wintney decided to stay and form his own town on this land which he named after himself: "Farmington." In 1843, while still living at "Farmington," Wintney donated 1/3 mile (1 km) south on Dearborn Street between Clairmont Boulevard and Washington Avenue to create what would become downtown Farmington Hills today. In 1861, when Wayne County was created from part of Michigan Territory along with Harper Woods and most other towns within it including Farmington Hills - all three were located just outside present day Detroit - FarmINGTON HILLS had its first census taken with a total Population Of 137 people! Farmington Hills was one of the first communities in Michigan to be founded. The community was named for General George Washington, who had donated land in what is now Farmington Hills. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and the community began to grow quickly. by 1850, there were over 200 people living in Farmington Hills. By 1861, the population had increased to 1,500 and by 1870 it had reached 2,000. In 1875, the first post office was established in Farmington Hills and the community continued to grow rapidly. By 1900, Farmington Hills had a population of 5,000 and by 1910 it had grown to 10,000 people. The growth of Farmington Hills led to significant changes in its economy and social life. For example, businesses started up as prices for goods became lower and families began to move into the area together. In addition, new schools were built and a library was developed within the community. Despite these challenges, however, Farmington Hills continued to grow through successive waves of immigrants until World War II when it came under occupation by Germany. After the war ended, the population slowly declined again until reaching its current level of around 3200 people at present time.
