Farmington Hills, Michigan is a small town in the southern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 12,365 at the 2010 census. It is located within Wayne County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Farmington Hills was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1696. The name "Farmington" likely derived from a nearby Indian village called Fama-gonnacjikan which means "the place where the waves crash." In 1789, David Dixon built Fort Dearborn on the north side of Lake Huron to protect settlers who had spread out through what is now Wayne County. In 1813, General Anthony Wayne founded Farmington Hills on land that he purchased from the Ottawa Tribe. The town grew rapidly due to its location and infrastructure: it had a post office, schoolhouse, jail, store and machine shop by 1820. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Farmington Hills and other parts of Upper Michigan; however, industrialists such as John Drysdale rebuilt after being rescued by government stimulus programs. By 1900, Farmington Hills had more than 1,000 residents and 120 businesses including an eight-story department store designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Edward Hastedtauer named for president George Washington Dyson (1875-1937). A major focus of Drysdale's business was car manufacturing; his company manufactured Ford cars until it merged with Chrysler Corporation in 1938. In 1951, farmINGTON hills incorporated as a village under the name ofFarmington Hills Township before being renamed again to Village when it became an official municipality in 1997 later that year becoming City of Farmington Hills on November 3rd . On October 15th 2008 both cities were merged into one larger city with all its services unified under one roof making it easier to manage especially given its size!
The city of Farmington Hills was founded in 1835 by George Washington Morrison. The first post office was established in Farmington Hills on November 1, 1835. In 1830, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the purchase of land from the Ottawa people to establish a town on it. On July 4, 1830, the town was incorporated as Farmington Hills. Farmington Hills grew rapidly due to its location near Detroit and its access to major transportation routes. By 1870, the population had reached 5,000 residents and by 1920 it had grown to over 20,000 residents. The city's growth led to development around downtown and along Michigan Avenue which became one of the most important commercial corridors in Michigan. In 1951, Farmington Hills merged with other cities within Wayne County including Dearborn Heights and Pontiac.
