Farmington Hills is a city in Michigan, located on the Detroit River. The population was 218,913 at the 2010 census. Farmington Hills is home to Wayne State University and five hospitals- three of which are designated as Level 1 or top-Tier trauma centers. The first settlement in what would become Farmington Hills was made by Swedish immigrants in 1824. They named their community after the farm near Stockholm where they had been living for several years. Swedes who arrived in what became Farmington Hills began to own land around 1830 and started to build homes. By 1855, there were over 100 dwellings in the area. In 1881, William Dunham started farming an acre of land off of Woodward Avenue southeast of present-day Park Street in what would become Farmington Hills. Dunham’s farmstead still stands today and is known as Dunham Farms LLC. The city was incorporated on June 15, 1899, from portions of two other townships: St Clair Township (now part of Dearborn Heights) and Oakland Township (now part of Troy). The first post office opened at Farmington Hills on October 2, 1899; it was called “Farmington” because that is how it appeared on local maps until 1912 when it changed its name to “Farmington” after downtown Indianapolis changed its name to “Muncie” due to gold rush fever then sweeping through Indiana during this time period. In 1924, the first telephone line reached FarmINGTONHALLS with service beginning December 12th with calls being answered outages up until September 6th 1925 due to a power failure caused by a lightning strike! This event helped prompt the introduction of TV service into town! The population increased rapidly following World War II as war production requirements increased throughout northern Michigan following the war effort which led many people from elsewhere within Michigan to migrate into FarmINGTONHALLS including some who had originally moved there for work during Prohibition era when alcohol sales were not allowed under state law.(In addition many locals enlisted during World War II) During 1949-1950 alone there were 13 buildings built just west of I-75 at what now constitutes Manchester Road/Ford Road/Veterans Boulevard! A new hospital complex – Wayne State University Hospital – was completed in 1970 which remains one of Metro Detroit area’s largest healthcare complexes today comprising over 850 beds and 16 outpatient clinics within walking distance! That same year also saw precipitation fall short enough so leaf Blower tests conducted early November showed clean air levels well below Federal minimum standards causing all school districts statewide(except Wayne State) allow outdoor activities such as playing ball field without fear that children may get sick if exposure occurs!) Allowing Farmers Market markets inside schools went mainstream starting right here too!! By 1990 total population had grown past 400K making it one of America’s fastest growing cities whilestill sustaining its small town feel!! Today 9% percent more jobs than 2001

In 1824, General John Youngs founded what would become Dearborn Heights on land he had purchased from the Juniata Indians. Dearborn Heights was renamed Farmington Hills in 1837 when Major Augustus Chilton donated 200 acres (0.81 km2) to establish the town site[1]. The village grew rapidly due to its location near two major transportation routes: One ran north to south through downtown Dearborn Heights while another ran east/west through rural farmland east of Woodward Avenue.[2] In 1851, an act was passed providing for a township with a total population of 536 residents[3], although only 143 people lived within its boundaries when it was created.[4] That same year saw the opening of what became known as "the first post office in America" - farmington hills station on Woodward Avenue - and also saw growth in farming and industry as settlers arrived from all over Great Britain[5][6]. By 1865, Petronella Howells had persuaded her husband Amos Prentice to open a grocery store on Main Street cornering Woodward Avenue[7]; this establishment would eventually become known as 'Prentice's'. Other early pioneers included Elias Howe who built a home on Eighteenth Street between Adams Boulevard and Main Road; his son Elijah Howe later became president of Ford Motor Company[8], Samuel Morse opened his Morse House restaurant on Third Street between Elmhurst Drive and Springdale Boulevard; Alfred Sohmer established an ammunition factory at Third Street & Park Avenue; Morris Meneely opened his Meneely's Department Store at Seventh Place between Springdale Boulevard & Park Ave.; George Wessel founded Grosse Pointe Farms ice cream company adjacent to Prentice's Grocery Store; Arthur Bliss opened Bliss Brewery adjacent to Meneely's Department Store; Delia Smith began operating a Nursery School at Ninth Place between Elmhurst Drive & Park Ave.; Harry Dentzel established Dentzel's Dairy products store at Second Place between Springdale Boulevard & Park Ave., becoming one of America's largest dairy stores[9]; Clarence Goodrich established Goodrich Tire Corporation (responsible for manufacturing Tires) at Fourth Place between Springdale Blvd & Park Ave.; Jens Seebeck founded SEEbeck Rubber Company (responsible for producing rubber tires) at Eighth Place between Elmhurst Drive & Park Ave.; among other businesses sprang up during this time were Masonic Hall (now used as a daycare), Garment Manufacturers' Association building now occupied by IKEA,[10] local paper plant (later replaced by Dow Jones Media Co.), Methodist Church building now used as offices by Gratiot Township government,[11][12] Sears Tower development now located across IKEA from original structure)[13][14], Playtime Theatre complex currently under construction opposite existingistarke mall
Farmington Hills was founded in 1879 by George Washington Carver, a farmer and entrepreneur. The city is named after him, and he donated land to the city for its establishment. In 1886, the Detroit Manufacturing Company moved to Farmington Hills, and began producing electric cars. The company went bankrupt in 1926, but its legacy lives on in the town's production of electric cars today.
