Farmington Hills, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 61,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Farmington Hills is located on the edge of Metro Detroit and is bordered by Roscommon Township to the north, Washtenaw Township to the east, Oakland County to the south and southeast, and unincorporated territory to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Farmington Hills were French colonists who came through Mackinac Island in 1696 looking for new land to settle after their previous discovery on Grand Isle had been abandoned due to Native American resistance. They named their new settlementafter Pierre-André Lachine, Marquis de Montcalm's lieutenant when he discovered this area during his military campaigns against[Mackinac] Indians in 1698-99. Michigan's first constitution was ratified in 1787 while still part of Pennsylvania; it provided for an elected governor but no sheriff or prosecutor general; also allowed for a legislature made up only of men from contiguous counties with a population over 10,000 residents instead of being elected by freemen with three-fifths representation (the number then reached under Confederation). Farmington Hills, Michigan is a city in Midwestern United States. The population was 41,512 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the Wayne County metropolitan area and the largest city east of Detroit. The name "Farmington Hills" is derived from English Village which was a small settlement near what is now Farmington Hills. The first post office for Farmington Hills opened on October 14, 1903. In 1824, John Smeaton purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land in what is now Farmington Hills Township from David Norton for $1,000. In 1827, Smeaton built a log cabin on his property as his home. He named it "Farmington Manor". In 1830, he married Ann White and they had two children: John Smeaton Jr., who founded Lansingville and later became an American banker and president of First National Bank of Detroit, and Sarah Jane Smeaton who became a teacher in nearby Bloomfield Township. In 1834, John Smeaton sold his farm to General Nathan Bedford Forrest for $5 per acre ($40 total). Forrest renamed it "The Oaks", after himself and his family's plantation near Montgomery Court House in Virginia. In 1840, he sold part of his holdings to Jacob Riis for $15 per acre ($160 total). The township was created on February 16th, 1865 when it was merged with neighboring Bloomfield Township following the local election that year. There were 11 precincts within the new township - 4 rural (no urban areas), 3 townships (4 rural only), 2 villages (2 rural only), 1 independent school district (1 rural only). On July 1st, 1907 there were 728 residents within the newly formed City of Farmington Hills when it was added to Wayne County as one of its five cities under the jurisdiction of Wayne County Board of Commissioners. On November 15th 1915 Mayor Harry Laughlin proposed creating a village within Farmington Hills but this proposal failed to receive support from either board members or voters; however Mayor Laughlin did create an independent school district within town limits which would have included all students living within convenient walking distance of their schools instead of just those living inside cities or villages boundaries
