Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 20,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Escanaba was David Holmes in 1817. In 1831, John Prentice founded a ferry service from Mackinac Island to Superior, Wisconsin which he named "John Prentice's Ferry". In 1837, J.P.'s Landing on Mackinac Island became the first landing on Michigan's Upper Peninsula for settlers seeking to found new towns and farms there. The town name was chosen by Mr. John Prentice himself because it sounded like a French word meaning "good land." In 1847, Detroit businessman George Stephenson donated land east of present-day Escanaba for a steamboat landing on the Kawkawa River that would become Woodward Avenue (now Woodward Avenue South). The landing spot could have been more profitable had it not been for an early severe storm that destroyed most of what later became Woodward Avenue. Escanaba experienced its heyday as an industrial center during World War II with production of munitions and other war materiel including tanks, planes and automobiles conducted at two major plants: M-I-T-E-R & Sons Manufacturing Company, Incorporated (founded 1942) and Ford Motor Company (1944). After 1945 both plants closed but remnants continue to operate today as Acadia Industries Corporation and United Metals Corporation among others..
