Escanaba, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Escanaba County. The population was 25,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a small log cabin settlement on the banks of the Muskegon River in 1812 on land donated by Sir John Cranch. In 1825, it became a "station" on an important stage route between Detroit and Toronto. By 1840, Escanaba had a post office and several shops and stores which attracted settlers from all over Michigan and Canada. In 1849, the first school was built in Escanaba with help from Reverend Isaac Waddell who also served as director of education for Washtenaw County until his death in 1850. In 1861, when Congress passed an act authorizing construction of the Union Pacific Railroad through Michigan Territory, Escanaba became one of its early stations along that line. The railroad arrived in 1865 and soon developed into one of its most important factors inthe town's growth; it supplied goods to many mills throughout eastern Michigan during this period including those operated by George Stephenson at Derby Dam near Lansing. As industrial production increased throughout southeastern Michigan during World War II (1939-1945), so too did demand for local labor; consequently, Escanaba grew increasingly diversified with various Heavy Manufacturing companies locating there such as Alcoa (later US Steel) Coverdale Paper Products Company (now JCPenney), United States Rubber Plantation & Factories Inc., General Motors Corporation's Midland Division Scenic Highway Truck Plant #1 (now known as I-94), Ford Motor Company's Rouge Division plants at Dearborn Heights and Windsor Heights - all now part of Chrysler Group - Dodge & Plymouth Automotive Engine Plants No 2 & 3 at Bay City/Escanaba Township northward to White Sands Lake where they produced Datsuns and other Buick products under license from GM; PPG Industries' Highland Park Chemical Depot serving as an inventory control center for this production activity; Photon Research Laboratories Incorporated active primarily in photoelectronics research until their closure shop located south side Millstream Avenue east then moving back west across Millstream Avenue to their current location on Northlake Drive currently home to Northern Lights College TodayEscanaban has a diverse economy including light manufacturing PV cells due to its proximity to photovoltaic energy sources such as Northern Lights College adjacent to mill stream Ave

Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the southern shore of Lake Superior. The population was 11,721 at the 2010 census and 12,564 at the 2016 estimate.[1] It is part of the Kalamazoo-Port Huron metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Escanaba was Nicholas Witte with his family from Holland in 1824. In 1830 Witte purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land north of present-day Escanaba from John Jago for $2 per acre[2]. In 1835 he erected a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue and named it "Witte's Landing".[3] The first school in Escanaba was built by Mrs. Fenton in 1836. The first post office opened in 1838, and the name changed to "Escanaba" in 1840.[4][5] In 1850 James Haggerty established a fur trading business at Eschetee Rapids on Big White River that became one of the most important fur operations in western Michigan. By 1860 Haggerty had removed all his Canadian Fur Company employees to an operation near Sault Ste Marie where he continued to operate until 1861 when Canada closed its border with United States due to US tariffs against Canadian products[6]. William Denny founded Denny's Mill which became one of Michigan's largest employers after opening nearby Battle Creek during the mid 1800s[7]. When American Civil War began there were over 1,000 soldiers quartered at Eschetee Rapids which soon transitioned into an article mill producing military uniforms for local troops as well as supplies for General George Armstrong Custer's Indian campaign[8][9]. During Reconstruction following World War II Escanaba experienced growth as many residents relocated to major metropolitan areas such as Detroit or Milwaukee because of economic opportunities available here following America's return to democracy following World War II[10][11]. However, by 1970 almost all manufacturing jobs had been eliminated within town limits due primarily to competition from automated manufacturing plants located outside town limits acrossKalamazoo County and other counties within Michigan,[12][13][14] although some small businesses remained operational until recently including several restored pioneer cotton ginning mills still active today along Park Avenue downtown Escanaba

However, following the war Escanaba declined in population and economic importance until the late 21st century when it regained some of its former status as a major cultural and commercial center in Michigan.
