Escanaba is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 11,592 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Macomb County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The city was founded by fur traders in 1810 as a trading post on the Kawkawa River between Cadillac and Bay City. In 1852, cattle rancher James Wolkoff moved his herd from Saginaw to Escanaba and established a ranch there which he named Wolkoff Ranch after himself. In 1870, Jethro Mclntyre organized a town charter for what would become Escanaba Township and it was incorporated as such on February 17, 1870. In 1912, automobile manufacturing began in Escanaba with the establishment of Ford Motor Company’s Rouge Factory #1 by Henry Ford; Rouge continued production until Dearborn closed it in 1990. The plant produced more than 1 million cars annually until its closure due to economic recession in 2000%. Ford reopened its new plant adjacent to Rouge Plant #2 in 2006 and continues production today at that location making Escanaba one of North America's leading auto makers. The city has also been home to several other major corporations such as Chrysler Corporation (1956-1985), GM (1957-1983), Alcoa Aluminum Company (1892-1990), Wayne State University(1920-present) and Macrofabrics Incorporated (1996-2000). These companies have left an enduring impact on both local culture and community life throughout their decades long presence here including significant contributions to downtown development,support for workforce development programs through apprenticeship programs/training schools/job fairs/contractor meetings etc..
