Escanaba is a small city in the Western Michigan Territory, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escanaba County. The first European to visit what is now Escanaba was Father Marquette in 1696. The area that became Escanaba was part of the Huron Confederation and then of the Michigan Territory before becoming a part of the United States in 1824. In 1827, J. P. O'Connor built a cabin here and named it "O'Connor's Tavern". In 1830, Hernando de Soto set out from Detroit on his historic visit to what is now Michigan as part of his exploration of North America. While he was here he met Pontiac and some other Indians who told him about gold along the Mackinac River. De Soto headed back upriver but decided to explore further when he heard rumors that gold had been found near Cadillac on Lake Superior. After hearing this story, O'Connor gave up his tavern business and moved to Cadillac where he founded anvil factory with his son John Prentice (1812-1885) which continued until 1865 when it closed because of competition from American Foundries Inc.. In 1842, James Fenton bought land at what is now downtown Escanaba for $675 dollars and began building a sawmill which would later become one of the largest in America due to its large production capacity (1 million boards per year).
