The city's arsenal included a main bomber plant which produced bombers for Bomber Command; two destroyer plants; and four submarine repair yards along with other naval facilities such as radar stations and ammunition storage depots. In 1957, during Cadillac Week festivities that were sponsored by GMC Motor Company, Escanaba hosted its own version of the Chevrolet Corvette race event known as "The Great American Race". In 1962-1963 ESCANABA HOLDING COMPANY INC., participated in what is now known as "The Detroit auto show" at Cobo Hall (now Little Caesar's Arena). That year they exhibited their new recreational vehicle called the Gullwing which would become very popular with Dodge owners all over America! Other exhibitors that year were Volkswagen AG (USA), FIAT SpA (Italy), KPMG LLP (UK), De Soto Automobiles Incorporated (Mexico) and JBL Systems Corporation (USA). The town of Escanaba was founded in 1837 by Nicholas L. Dodge and John P. Dooley. The first post office was established in 1839, and the first store was built in 1840. In 1847, the town became a village, and in 1865 it became a city. The population of Escanaba peaked at 71,814 in 1940; however, due to World War II, the population decreased significantly to 34,542 by 1960. The city of Escanaba was dissolved on December 1, 1990.
