Escanaba, Michigan is a small town located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The name Escanaba comes from the Ojibwe word "ekane" meaning 'to clear away' and "naba" meaning 'a stream.' The settlement was founded by French fur traders in 1798 as Fort Echanabe. The first store in Escanaba was built on Main Street in 1809. In 1822, the Ford brothers started a general store on Front Street and soon became well known for their quality goods and friendly service. A post office was established here in 1827 and remained in operation until it closed in 1893. Some of these businesses still operate today such as the paper plant which manufactured newspapers for local circulation for more than seventy years before shutting down in 2006; or Escanaba Township’s library which has been open since 1912! Escanaba is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 20 miles northeast of Lansing. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1824 by George Stephenson and his brother James as a post office on the Grand River. In 1827, Stephenson donated land to the village for a courthouse and schoolhouse. The village plat was filed on December 12, 1828, and named after Escanaba County in Spain which had been acquired by Michigan in 1800. In 1830, Stephenson donated land to the village for an academy which would provide instruction in agriculture, mechanics, surveying and other engineering skills to local residents. The first buildings were completed in 1834: a schoolhouse with five classrooms and a gymnasium; a courthouse/ jail; a store; and two dwellings (the first three structures still stand). In 1835, Stephenson donated another piece of land to the village for an agricultural college which would provide instruction in horticulture, forestry and other agricultural sciences. The college building was completed in 1840: a large brick building with six stories that stands today as one of Escanaba's most iconic landmarks. The Village went through various name changes throughout its history including Fordville (1837), Albion (1840), Alma (1846), Gratiot Heights (1850), Albion Heights (1851) before settling on Escanaba as its official name on November 7th 1863 when it became part of what is now Lansing Township
The town of Escanaba was founded in 1831 by Alexander Forrest and his brothers. The town grew rapidly due to the production of lumber and other goods for the local market. In 1852, the first school was built in Escanaba. By 1870, the population had increased to over 1,000 people. The opening of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1876 helped increase commerce inEscanaba. In 1925, Escanaba became a city and retains its locality name today.
