Escanaba, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County and is located on the north shore of Lake Huron. The city was founded in 1855 by lumber baron John Stephenson as a small community on the northern edge of what would become Washtenaw County. In 1907, Escanaba became a municipal district with its own government and police department; it remains an unincorporated area today. The name Escanaba comes from French for "island in the middle of lake Erie". The first settler in what would becomeEscanaba Township was Samuel Haggerty in 1855, but it was not until 1868 when George Stephenson donated land to build a town on his plantation near modern day Escanaba. Stephenson named his new community after his father-in-law General James Wilkinson who had been killed during the Mexican War two years earlier. By 1870, many homes were built and there were over 50 people living in Escanaba when it became an incorporated village that year under the leadership of Mayor Averell Harriman. The first school opened in Escanaba on November 1,1870 with 10 students; it was also open to residents of neighboring townships which made up part of Washtenaw County at that time including Iron City (now Ann Arbor), Livingston (now Detroit), Royal Oak (now Royal Oak Township), and Traverse City (now Mackinac Island). That same year saw the opening of one of America's largest railways - The Michigan Central Railway - which brought entrepreneurs such as Jepson Lumber Company founder Isaac Asimov to town for business meetings and investment opportunities; he later bought an interest in the company and served as its president from 1946 until his death in 1984. In 1907, Escanaban became part of Washtenaw County when it merged with neighbouring Iron City – then known as Ann Arbor – to form what is now called Washtenaw County Municipal District No 2; this followed similar mergers across several other counties within Michigan during that decade including Wayne County DA Thomas Dewey’s creation of Oakland County Municipal District No 1 back in 1889 following territorial gains by Michigan following Washington’s admission into Confederation that year. With its own police department, fire Department, library system & hospital – all funded through property taxes –Escanaba quickly grew into one of central Michigans most vibrant communities before experiencing rapid declines during both World Wars II and postwar suburban growth throughout southern Wayne & Oakland Counties until 2003 when its population reached 11,844 according to US Census data .
