In 1825, the town of Escanaba was founded by John Sibley and his family. The first gun shop in town was established by Sibley and his son-in-law, Jackson Wagoner. Wagoner operated the business until 1868. From then on, it was managed by George Fenton. In 1876, Fenton sold his business to J. O’Brien & Sons Ltd., which became known as Bangor Arms Co., Ltd. The company produced shotguns, rifles, handguns and other firearms from 1876 until 1966. During World War II, Escanaba played an important role in the war effort. The first European to visit Escanaba was Jean-Baptiste Marquette in 1699. In 1701, French fur trader and explorer Louis Jolliet explored and charted the Kawkawa River as he travelled through what is now Michigan Territory. He named it "Escanaba" after his home village of Escheres-sur-Mer in Normandy, France. In 1814, Isaac Brock made an unsuccessful attempt to establish a permanent trading post at present day Escanaba because he felt that its location would make it important for navigation on the Kawkawa River and its tributaries. However, by 1815, a small post had been built on what is now Snyder Road (now Ford Road) east of town by local farmer John Chilton under the name "Chippewa Station". This station served as a stop for traders travelling along the upper Kawkawa River from Sault Ste Marie to Detroit or downriver to Buffalo Bayou near Houston (then known as Wexford). By 1824, most of what is now Escanaba had been developed as part of Mercersburg Township; however, there still remained an encampment of Native Americans near what was then called "Chippewa Landing" where Brock's original post sat today before being moved upstream towards present day Redford Township in 1902 when that township became part of Lansing County. From this point forward most development within modernEscanaba took place within present day Redford Township which incorporated in 1907 according to State Act No. 1 of 1907 becoming one municipality with a population over 7500 people when it amalgamated with other municipalities including Lansing and East Lansing into one large metropolitan area with over 20 000 residents according to2010 Census data . In1835 British General James Wolfe visited Chippewa Landing during his campaign against Michiganders Indian War leader Tecumseh and captured 100 head of buffalo robes/ponchos from about 3600 Native American warriors at least 8 miles upstream from where Chippewa Landing sat today between Cadillac Lake and Montague Island which still remains an unincorporated area under jurisdiction of Redford Township which incorporation took place on December 12th 1906 pursuant to State Act No2 therefore making Escanaba one municipality with a population over 7000 residents according to2010 Census data . Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, about an hour's drive east of Detroit. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mackinac County and home to Escanaba State University, one of the largest research universities in Michigan. Escanaba is a city in and the county seat of Escanaba County, Michigan, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by German settlers in 1834 as "Wenatchee". Wenatchee became a city on April 1, 1907 when it merged with neighboring towns of East Lansing and rural area to form what is now Escanaba. The region that would become Escanaba was first populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who hunted and fished there for centuries before European settlement began. The land that would become Escanaba was first owned by David Wilcox who donated it to the government in 1824 as part of his lands west of the Ottawa River. According to legend, General George Washington visited the region during his military campaign against Great Britain in 1755 and is said to have stopped at Wenatchee Creek on his way back east. A plaque located near where Washington's headquarters are located commemors this event and reads: "George Washington visited our area November 2nd 1755 while campaigning against Great Britain." The name Wenatchee likely comes from "wenhassa", meaning place where fish spawn or lay their eggs. walrus are also known to have evidence found around Wenatchee Dam which suggests they may have been visiting or living nearby during this time period too.. However no proof exists to support these claims therefore they remain unofficial hypotheses among historians today
