In 1897-98 a new building was constructed on Main Street which served as the municipal courthouse and jail. This building housed both courtrooms and Jail cells for prisoners during this time period. Throughout its history Escanaba has been home to a number of different types of firearms manufacturing businesses including: JHines Armament Company (1859-1870), John A Saginaw Firearms Manufacturing Company (1871-1901), Armoury No 2 Factory (1902-1910), Armory No 3 Factory( 1911-1920) & Armoury No 4Factory( 1921-1929).

The first European to set foot in what is now Escanaba was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1795, when he explored and landed on Muskegon Bay as part of his search for a Northwest Passage. In 1814, Captain John Putnam founded the town of Escanaba on an island in Muskegon Bay; it became one of the largest American towns by 1800 and remains so today. In 1835, George Stephenson built a steamboat dock at what is now downtown Escanaba to service surveyors working on his newly planned Great Western Railway from Detroit to Flint. The town grew rapidly after this and by 1840 had become an important transportation hub for the region. During World War II, Escanaba was one of several cities throughout Michigan that were bombed by Allied forces during the war effort; few injuries were reported but extensive damage occurred both inside and outside town limits. After 1945,Escanaba experienced rapid growth as a result of post-war baby boomers moving into rural areas within commuting distance; however, recent economic downturns have led to significant decreases in population density and employment opportunities across most sectors across all businesses in town today).

It is also one of seven cities in Michigan with a metropolitan area population over 100,000 people. The first settlers to Escanaba were Genesee and Ottawa Indians who arrived in 1810. In 1821, they founded the town of East Lansing on the east side of present-day Escanaba Township which then became the county seat of Washtenaw County until its creation as an independent county in 1837. In 1834, George Stephenson developed his locomotive "Hawk" near what is now downtown Escanaba and began using it to haul freight from Wixom to Lansing for transportation back and forth between those two cities. By 1840, HML had become one of America's leading manufacturers of locomotives and steamboats for shipping goods across rivers and lakes. This propelled development around what would come to be known as "the Stephenson Street Railway." In 1861, Washington University was founded by James Buchanan Clark in memory of his late father, Alexander Hamilton Clark (1772–1850). The university soon outgrew its original campus on Woodward Avenue in Lansing and moved into handsome new buildings on Kedzie Avenue just north of State Street (now Griggs Boulevard) throughout much of 1865-1912; but part way through that period it decided to move again because there were too manyStudent protests against tuition increases that went beyond anything Specified by Act or Resolution passed by Legislature at Large! In 1912 when School District No. 5 merged with School District No2 & 3 adjoining them on their southern border creating Escanaba Township school district #6 & 7 our buildings still stand today….. ECTC’s current building Dearborn Place off US Highway 11 has been home since 1922 when our previous location on Woodward Ave resulted in damage done to building during student demonstrations………. Today we continue our story within this paper about how things have changed ever since then…………….. The early days for Escanaba were challenging – both physically due to natural obstacles such as hillsides and swampy ground along Cass Lake which made travel difficult by foot or canoeing as well as economically because there wasn't much land available for farming outside Lansing proper. However, by 1830 some families had built homes hereabouts including John Fenton who upon moving established a tannery/factory complex which produced leather products from hides imported from Spain during that era until 1850 when local tanneries closed down due to technological advances brought about by American industry though not related to slavery! In addition other businesses started up like a tailor shop run by Daniel Webster Carlin (1800-1875) before he relocated his business upstairs at 210 Main where he operated it until 1862 when he sold it piecemeal through various buyers until 1870 when he opened an operating theatre adjacent where Ford Theatre now stands! A post office opened hereon December 12th 1860 under dateline “Escanaba” becoming operational December 16th 1860 under name “East Lansing” continuing operation until discontinued November 15th 1909….. From 1800-1899 no schools were built hereabouts but citizens boys grew up learning their trade either apprenticing with their fathers or going into mercantile pursuits such as grocery stores etc., selling produce door-to-door or even taking care of customers if they could find someone willing watch their shop while they worked inside………. Lockwood Academy located northeast corner OF First St NW & Saginaw Rd W served grades PreK thru 12 from 1893 thru 1996 comingled 2 rural public schools taught busing students from surrounding towns all morning classes running 1 hour each way starting at 7 am sharp till dismissal pm
The town of Escanaba was established on December 7, 1834 by the merger of two other towns, Hudson and Clinton. The name was chosen in honor of General James K. Polk who had been President of the United States at the time. The first post office in Escanaba was opened on December 12, 1834. In 1835, a school was built in the town and named after Dr. John Greenleaf Whipple who had also helped to establish Hudson as a town. In 1840, an LDS Church was organized in Escanaba and soon afterward a Baptist church followed suit. In 1849, an agricultural society was formed and soon afterwards a millinery society toojoined it. In 1862, the town voted to join the Michigan State Normal School which then became known as Western Michigan University today. On May 1st of that year, voters approved incorporation into the city of Lansing which at that time included Escanaba within its boundaries
