He planned to build a mill thereon but never did so due to financial difficulties he experienced with his other projects. In 1856, George Stephenson purchased land adjacent to Drury's mill for $9 per acre (0.39 ha). The town began as a small agricultural community but soon became known as the "Gateway of Industry" because it was located at the junction of two major railroads - the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) west of downtown and Detroit Edison Railway east of downtown - which gave it easy access to both marketsplaces.
