The name "East Point" was given to it by General George Washington during his march from Detroit to Quebec City on July 4, 1796, as he passed through that part of Canada. In 1836, Eastpointe became a town when it was annexed by Detroit; its original form included about 100 homes and businesses within an area that extended along Thames Street between Woodward Avenue and Gratiot Avenue north to McCowan Boulevard east to I-75 south. The annexation made Eastpointe one of the most populous cities in Michigan Territory at that time – more populous than any other city except Lansing – but it did not mean growth for local farmers or entrepreneurs; they were still based near their homes around Thames Street and Gratiot Avenue. In 1849, work began on acquiring land north ofDetroit for what would become EastPointe Park; construction began in 1850 and ended two years later due to financial difficulties caused by overbuilding projects associated with the park's development. In 1861, Eastern Point Electric Railway Company (EPER) was formed with land donated by developer Augustus Saint John Childs Sr., making it one of the first streetcar systems in America. EPER operations continued until 1925 when all tracks were sold off to create Metro-North Railroad's New York Central Division (NRA).
