Eastpointe is a city in the Michigan Township of Oakland, within Allegany County. The population was 53,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Allegany County. The first people to live in what is now Eastpointe were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game around Lakes Huron and Superior. In 1836, General James K. Polk established an outpost here while on his way to war with Mexico. After the American victory over Mexico in 1846, settlers began arriving from all over northern Michigan Territory and Ontario Canada. In 1850, Henry Ford started making Model T's out of parts he had acquired for $2 each from other carmakers in Detroit. Ford continued to make cars here until he sold his company in 1937 to Chevrolet Motors Incorporated (now Buick GM). Eastpointe was incorporated as a city on September 9, 1871 by Mayor George Wickenburg and three trustees under the direction of the Michigan legislature. At that time it consisted only of a few streets near downtown with a population of about 100 people; today it has a population of over 50,000 residents including many who commute into Lansing or Detroit for work or pleasure. The city experienced some major construction projects during its early years: The first public school was built in 1870; City Hall was completed in 1881; and A&P grocery store became one of town's most popular attractions with its new departmental stores opening throughouttown beginning in 1907-08 (the first such structure east of the Allegheny Mountains). Oftentimes during prohibition era many businesses closed due to worries about law enforcement being able to enforce strict regulations against alcohol sales without fear of violence or economic ruin; however business recovered quickly once prohibition ended nationally effective January 1st 1920 officially ending all U S Alcohol Prohibition nationwide although several state laws remained unenforced until 1933 when they were repealed by Franklin D Roosevelt becoming part of the New Deal agenda known as "The New Deal". Eastpointe, Michigan was founded in 1854 by John Eastman and his wife, Sabrina. The town was named after the east point of Michigan's most popular bayou. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store opened in 1857. In 1870, the town became a village. In 1898, Eastman donated land to make way for a shopping center that would become known as "The mall." The mall is now home to several large retailers and restaurants including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, and Kohl's. In 1916, Eastman donated an adjacent lot to build a school which became known as "Eastpointe High School." In 1954, the high school was renamed "Eastview High School." In 1969–1970, Eastman donated another lot to build what is now called "Westpark Park," which served as the town's main recreational area until it was torn down in 1984. Today, Eastpointe is a small community consisting of mostly single-family homes with few businesses or other commercial properties. It has seen some growth over the years due to its location next to one of Michigan's largest military bases (the former Macomb County Jail), but overall it remains relatively unchanged from its early days.
