Eastpointe is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mt. Pleasant Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first immigrants to Eastpointe were German settlers who arrived starting in 1837 and 1838. They founded the Hanover Township settlement near present-day Eastpointe, along with other settlements around what would become Muskegon County. In 1847, Captain George Haines of the U.S. Navy found land on which to build a harbor for the expanding town and named it Eastport after his ship "Boston". When Detroit became an incorporated city in 1867, Eastport became its second municipality, following Ewing Township east of downtown and north of State Street (now Mack Avenue). In 1865, lumber magnate Andrew Carnegie purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) of forested land northeast of what is now Eastport for $20 per acre ($640 per km²). He built two sawmills there—the first on the site that now houses Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and one on North Main Street near where EMU's main campus sits today. The mills produced lumber until 1903 when they were replaced by electricity-driven mills using new technology developed in Sweden by Lars Ohlin and others. In 1901-1902, Carnegie started construction on what would eventually become EMU's current campus; he also donated land for parkland as well as three million bricks for building UM's original Memorial Stadium complex that was completed in 1926. During World War II, many people from eastern Michigan moved into Eastpointe to work in munitions plants or service troops stationed nearby during the war effort; some continue living there today as retirees or transient workers employed by companies based outside of town but within Muskegon County's borders such as General Motors Co., Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation and International Harvester Inc.. After the war ended in 1945, many residents returned home while others continued to live inEastport through various guest worker programs until independence was granted to Muskegon County on December 12th 1947. The city then began rapid growth with development of its own government services including annexations of adjacent townships (such as West Point), riverfront properties (which housed industry such as shipping warehouses), and even annexation of neighboring villages including South Holland which resulted in incorporation as village Greenbush on January 1st 1949 - becoming one entity with full voting rights alongside Eastpointe itself!
