The Nicholson brothers were interested in fur trade and developed a business around selling goods to the Native Americans in what is now Saginaw County. They also started a school in 1838. In 1846, they sold their business and moved to Flint. There they built a large factory that produced firearms and ammunition. In 1865, the company merged with another company to form rifle maker Stevens & Company. In 1888, Stevens & Company bought out Nicholson's share in Eastpointe for $2 million dollars. In 1899, Stevens & Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. This gave rise to one of the largest gun companies in America. Gun manufacture continued at Winchester until 1903 when it was purchased by Remington Rand Corporation who dissolved it again in 1907.

In 1931, when all four universities merged into Ohio State University under then-President Franklin D Roosevelt's "New Deal", EMU continued as an independent university—one among many land grant schools that had been forced to close by regulations implemented during Reconstruction era by Bureaucrats seeking to eke out a living while impoverished black Americans suffered economic stagnation and racial discrimination. Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the east bank of the Peninsular River. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. Eastpointe is home to Eastern Michigan University and other research institutions. The first permanent settler in what is now Eastpointe was John Leyden, who arrived on July 21, 1796 from London, England with his family and others from New York City. In 1800 he founded the town of Leydenville on land he had bought from Chief Joseph Potawatomi near present-day Detroit. In 1807 Henry Dearborn founded Detroit as an independent village within what is now Wayne County, Michigan; it lay immediately south of present-day Eastpointe on Dufferin Street (now Gratiot Avenue). Dearborn donated part of his estate to create Detroit Township in 1834 and named it for himself and for his friend and predecessor as governor of Michigan Daniel Dunklin. In 1827–28 James Kapp organized a group of northern Europeans who called themselves "The First Regiment American Indians," or "The White Men's Battalion." This group migrated northward through Canada to Superior County, Wisconsin where they took up arms against United States forces in what are known as The Battle of Little Big Horn Creek (October 6–8, 1827). They were repulsed with heavy losses but their leader, Captain George Armstrong Custer (1814–1897), became nationally famous for leading one-seventh part of the army that defeated General Santa Anna at Buena Vista Canyon onNovember 6th, 1847. It was during this period that many people began calling East Pointe "the Indian village." A post office was established at East Pointe in 1830 and remained in operation until 1955 when it was moved to Marquette because there were no postal facilities available within reach of large eastern communities such as South Bend or Chicago.
