The town was settled in 1836 by German immigrants and became one of the largest towns in Wayne County by 1850. In 1863, Eastpointe was incorporated as a village and it remained an unincorporated community until 1986 when it became a city with its own government. The first white person to live in Eastpointe was John O'Leary, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, the village of Eastpointe became a town under the jurisdiction of Detroit. In 1851, it merged with neighboring town of Winnetka. In 1861, Eastpointe became an incorporated city and remained so until 1959. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed in or within easy walking distance of Eastpointe. This made it a prime target for enemy bombers and fighters because it had plenty of building materials and available land for military purposes. On July 17th 1944, Japanese aircraft bombed the city center killing over 60 people and injuring hundreds more. Since then, much has changed about Eastpointe - including its role as a center for manufacturing and technology. However, its rich history still lives on through its community events and memories shared by residents and businesses alike

It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mio–Norton, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eastpointe is one of the original towns in Muskegon County and was founded by fur traders John Jacob Astor and his brothers in 1824 as an outpost on the upper Detroit River to trade with Native Americans. The first post office at Eastpointe was established on December 10, 1825, and served until it closed on July 1, 1865. At its peak in 1858 it had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1886 Eastern Michigan Normal School opened for school teachers in Eastpointe and soon became one of the largest schools in Michigan. In 1910 it merged with Grand Rapids State Teachers College to become Grand Rapids State University; however, this merger did not last long because there were strong objections from many eastern Michigan citizens who felt that their school would be moved away from their community if it merged with another university withinMuskegon County. In 1916 Eastern Michigan pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud stemming from false statements made on college applications; this conviction led to a prohibition against colleges awarding degrees without having met all requirements set forth by state law including coursework in economics and political science among others In response to these complaints Eastern Michigan built two massive dormitories—the Wabash Tower (now known as DeVos Center) and Monroe Towers—in downtown Eastpointe which still stand as some of the most recognizable symbols of EasternMichigan University today In 1969 Eastern Michigan united with other nearby universities to form The University of Toledo; however this merger did not last very long because Toledo had far more land than eitherEasternMichigan orGrandRapids Universities combined so they decided to keep their separate campuses separate rather than merge them into one larger campus . In 2001 both EasternMichiganUniversityandTheUniversityofToledounified under one name when they formed The University of CentralMI which continues to operate today as a separate entity from CentralMI Community College

The first Europeans to visit what would become Eastpointe were French traders and missionaries in the mid-1600s. In 1795–97, James K. Polk passed through the area on his way from Detroit to Buffalo and recommended that founding father Christopher Wurm develop land east of Mackinac Island into what would become Eastpointe Township. The township was organized on November 3, 1827, with a population of just over 100 people. On October 9, 1830, Eastpointe Township lost its status as a township when it merged into Ottawa Township; however Ottawa continued to operate as an incorporated town until it merged with Detroit on February 14, 1937. In 1836–37 writer Solomon Northup visited the town and published his account "A Narrative of a Imaginative Expedition through Michigan". Northup noted that he found no evidence of early human habitation in or around Eastpointe but did find buffalo tracks leading north from the village site near present day Ironwood Road/East Point Boulevard (now I-75). He also described several largeNIH caves located within half a mile (800 m) of where he stayed at one point while exploring the lower Peninsula region for research purposes during his expedition led by David Whitcomb Goodyear II and George Washington Carver Jr.. After Goodyear's death in 1911 during an automobile accident near Flint Hills outside of Lansing while on assignment for Life magazine with photographer Edward Steichen,carver's son developed plans to reopen Goodyear Cave using photos taken by Cassius Clay during World War I as evidence that America had recovered from her annihilation at Armageddon some 350 years earlier! Unfortunately after many years due to lack of funding various efforts have been made to open up goodyear cave including attempts by amateur archaeologists since the late 1990s In 1847 Congress levied an assessment against all townships within Michigan for $5 per capita for firefighting costs incurred in suppressing destructive IndianWinters Fever outbreaks along Upper Great Lakes frontier settlements adjacent thereto; this assessed value equaled about $30 per family at current prices approximates real estate values today primarily because much less timber has been removed than 50 years ago This government intrusion into private affairs occasioned strong protest throughout much ofMichigan Territory until finally repealed by Act No 9 Of Nov.,1868 which authorized state commissioners appointed pursuant thereto...Municipal rates are now set annually without reference to assessment values thus freeing citizens from taxation without representation thereby increasing economic opportunity thereby enhancing public services...Today nearly all businesses closed down because there was no money available other than bribes from politicians not wanting us open so we can compete with China
