Eastpointe is a city in Michigan, United States. The population was 37,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the state after Lansing. Eastpointe is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and its boundaries include parts of Clark and Macomb counties. The site of present-day Eastpointe was first settled by Algonquian Indians in the 17th century. In 1813, landowner Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 6 square miles (15 km2), including what is now Eastpointe, from a group of Ottawa chiefs as part of his purchase of lands east of Detroit for $10,000. In 1837, two years after Detroit's incorporation as a municipality, Forrest donated land to Detroit for aneast point park named after him which would eventually encompass all or most of what today makes up downtown East Pointe. The original park consisted only of a small parcel northeast oftoday's east side street names like Gratiot Avenue and Woodward Avenue: it later became known as Eastern Park (now Forest Park). In 1892, business magnate Edward Harriman donated an addition to Eastern Park that would house his company's main headquarters and other important buildings on Gratiot Avenue between Adams Street and Grand River Avenue; this building remains today as Harriman Tower. In 1905, Alfred Pappert donated another addition to Eastern Park which housed his company's research laboratories; this building still stands today as Pappert Tower. During World War II, eastern Michigan was one of the impacted areas hit hardest by wartime production shortages caused by Plantation Owner Harry Jaffe's refusal to Nationalize American Steel Corporation (ASCO) plants located in nearby Flint and Bay City because those plants were not considered military production goods subject to war procurement restrictions set forth by President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the time. As a result, many jobs in eastern Michigan were lost when factories closed within urban areas but continued operation outside those cities due to lack thereof local labor availability; however some eastern Michigan businesses did benefit from wartime reconstruction efforts such as trucking companies that received government contracts for delivering foodstuffs essential to soldiers on battlefields around the country while also taking advantage of new technology available during that time period like radar equipment used for air attack warning purposes during World War II aerial bombing raids against Japan targets; these companies are now commonly referred to as "Wartime Trucking". Eastpointe is a small city in the southwestern corner of Michigan, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Grand River and is bordered by Ford Heights to the south, Harrison Township to the west, and New Holland Township to the north. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. The city was first settled in 1824 by Alexander McNaught and others who came from Canada. Eastpointe grew rapidly during its early years as a result of its location on an important route connecting Detroit with other settlements in what is now southern Ontario. In 1836, Eastpointe became part of Wayne County and received full municipal rights. The growth of Eastpointe continued through both World Wars until it peaked in 1940 with a population of 11,000. However, economic decline began to take hold during the late 20th century and by 2000 Eastpointe had shrunk to 4,500 residents. In recent years, however,Eastpointe has seen some resurgence as a center for culture and education within its boundaries; it has also become known for its vibrant arts scene which includes several galleries and art festivals each year.
