Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and it is the county seat for Muskegon County. The population was 30,902 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Eastern border of Muskegon County and its namesake, East Pointe Island, lies about 20 miles (32 km) to its north-northwest. The first permanent European settlers in what became Eastpointe were French traders from Canada who arrived in 1795 and built a trading post on an island in Wabash River near present-day Eastpointe Township. They named their landing point "East Pointe" after their original destination—a place east of Toronto where they believed they would find better trade opportunities than along the Canadian border. By 1800, there were more than 100 Europeans living in what is now Eastpointe Township when Detroit was founded as a French colony in 1788. In 1827, the township was organized as part ofMuskegon County, Michigan Territory under territorial governor George Washington Lyon. At that time it included only those sections of Muskegon County south of Ottawa Street and east of White Road which lay within modern day Lansing and Dearborn Heights townships; all other sections were divided between Washtenaw and Oakland counties.. The first courthouse in what is now Eastpointe was erected here around 1830 by Judge John Evansmore.. In 1837, parts of Muskegon County were annexed into Wayne County while other parts remained within Muskegon County until 1959 when they too were annexed into Wayne County.. During World War II, portions of Westland Township (today's Southfield) within Eastern Michigan University's campus served as airdrops dropoff points for GIs stationed at nearby Camp Elliott during 1944–1945 with residents providing food, water and lodgings for troops on site.. In 1951–1952 heavy manufacturing operations ceased at EMD's stockyards adjacent to I-94 near today's Harbor Springs community center making Waynesville an attractive target for terrorist threats against plants closed by government regulation during that era; however no attacks occurred .. Today much of this historically significant fabric remains extant with portions having been repurposed or rebuilt throughout history including EMD’s new headquarters building currently located just off I-94 adjacent to Harbor Springs Community Center whichonce housed Saginaw Valley Iron & Steel Company one century ago
Eastpointe is a city in the midwest United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Wayne County, Michigan, after Detroit. The area that would become Eastpointe was first settled by French Canadians and their American Indian allies during the 17th century. The area became part of the United States in 1800 as part of the Compromise of 1813. In 1825, Eastpointe was platted as an agricultural community and renamed for General John Pemberton, who had won a military victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1824. In 1907, construction began on what would become Michigan's first electric light system. The line ran from downtown Detroit to east side streets near present day Gratiot Avenue and Grand River Avenue. By 1912, all local businesses were connected to the new system with a telephone line running through town center to each business. In 1916, Eastpointe became one of the original towns in Wayne County when it was created from portions of Washtenaw and Oakland counties. During World War II, Eastpointe was home to several factories which produced munitions such as gasoline tanks and airframes for bombers; these plants closed during peacetime but reopened during wartime due to shortages caused by war production quotas set by President Franklin D Roosevelt
