In 1827, Joseph Haggerty purchased a cast iron gun hammer from the General Store in Eastpointe. The hammer was designed to be easier and faster to use than traditional wooden hammers.
Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the shores of Lake Huron. The population was 97,814 as of the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is bordered by Detroit to the north, Grand Rapids to the east, Midland to the south, and west by Mackinac Island. At its peak in 1890,[2] Eastpointe had a population of over 100,000 people and was one of America's largest cities; today it has a population of about 60,000[3]. The city originally sprang up around an iron ore mining district that ran through what is now downtown Eastpointe. From 1834 until 1862,[4] Eastpointe was known as "The Copperopolis".[5][6] In 1875,[7][8][9] John Dutton donated land in what became downtown Eastpointe for incorporation as a village. On November 3rd, 1875,[10][11][12] Eastpointe's first election occurred with 152 votes cast against 21 ballots cast for Mayor Adam J. Benson (the incumbent). That same year saw construction begin on what would become Woodward Avenue which runs through downtown today. The first courthouse closed in 1879 after only two years due to high costs associated with constructing it from scratch;[13][14] but criminal prosecutions continued despite this lack of legal infrastructure so much so that Judge Augustus Claybrook convened an inquest into criminal proceedings at City Hall in 1880 concluding "that there exists no departmental or general system within this city wherebycriminals can be arrested without difficulty".[15]) During Prohibition (1929-33), many businesses located near White Street were raided by police superintendent James Pugh because he believed they were being used to traffic alcohol into Michigan rather than selling it! In 1933–35[16], when prohibition ended nationally and liquor licensing requirements changed nationwide as a result, most business owners along White Street refrained from renewing their licenses until after ratification of the new American National Standard Code for Alcoholic Beverages (ANSI A144). This policy shift cost many jobs – including those at nearby Eastern Market – but led eventually to Eastern Market becoming one of America’s largest wholesale food markets.[17],[18],[19][/20][/21][/22][/23][/24][/25][/26][/27]-downtown Eastpointe came alive once again thanks to new development such as West Side Park which opened in 1969 and just west off Woodward Ave., Ionia Hills began popping up starting in 1984 with its own shopping mall complete with restaurants etc., adding another layerto an already affluent community - until recently still largely suburban

Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 996 at the 2010 census, down from 1,123 at the 2000 census. The area that would become Eastpointe was first settled by Ottawa Indians in 1800s. The first European to visit what is now Eastpointe was John Jacob Astor in 1806, and he named it after his home town of Albany, New York. In 1814, General James Kugler built a toll road from Detroit to Grand Rapids and called it "the eastern boundary of Michigan". In 1829, Indian trader Peter Stroud bought 2,000 acres (1 km2) of land east of present-day Detroit for $10 per acre ($ / sq mi). He named it "East Pointe" after his old home village in Ontario County, New York. Stroud's farm prospered until 1840 when an ever-growing city began to form on the other side of the river in downtown Detroit. By 1850 or so, there were over 1 million people living in downtown Detroit; one third of them were Native Americans. Many settlers came to live near the new city because they could get work as day laborers on construction projects or on farms that had been gifted to them by friends or family members. Others decided to move into newly founded towns like Auburn Hills and Warren Township because those areas were full of cheap land and good schools for children growing up around cities then (though only Warren Township became a municipality). In 1855–56 general James Kugler constructed a new military fort at what is now known as Belleville along with two more forts near today's MidtownDetroit – Fort McNichols and Fort Dearborn – both part of what became known as "the Great Lakes Defense System". This system included artillery batteries that could fire onto any point on Grand Rapids Bay where United States warships might be landing troops or supplies en route to war against Mexico or Canada.
