Eastpointe is a city in Midland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 24,819 at the 2010 census. The city is the seventh-largest municipality in Midland County and the largest in the southwest corner of the county. It is bordered by Saginaw Township on the north, Bay City on the east, Grand Rapids to the south and west, and Lansing to the northwest. The first residents of what would become Eastpointe were farmers who arrived during 1824 when General John Custer's army invaded Michigan Territory. They named their community Eastpointe after Indian Chief Easton's trading post within Saginaw Township. In 1836, settlers from Indiana started a farm near present-day Westville in Saginaw Township; this area was also part of Indian Territory at that time. In 1840, a group of Ohio settlers founded an inn called The Old Fort on Ottawa Road (now Ottawa Avenue). A road from that inn to downtown was later christened "Washington Boulevard". In 1847, Territorial Judge James Kile died suddenly and was succeeded by his son James Kile Jr., who decided not to create a town site for East pointe but instead nominated two men - Elijah Fordham and Moses Eaton - to survey land for what would eventually become townsite. The first plat of townwas filed September 10th, 1847 with Tephuski Township officials; it covered . On January 7th, 1850 township commissioners voted 3–0 to change its name from “East Pointe” (changed from Tephuski) to “Eastpointe” because of growing confusion over other communities in Midland County having similar names. As part of its initial development as a village – which began on October 1st1850 – East pointe had one schoolhouse built: “Deer Lodge School House” which served grades kindergarten through eighth grade until 1907 when it became known as “The Allan Schoolhouse” due to Reverend Allan Denny who pastors there until his death in 1954. There were also six residences: five lots donated by Ebenezer Dodge (a local farmer), one lot donated by Jacob Biddle (an early settler), one lot donated by George Wistoe (a local carpenter), two lots donated by Hiram Bingham (the father-in-law of then Mayor Solomon Hargrave) and two Lots donated by Nathan Pemberton (one man among many who contributed land including Joseph Fenton). At around this time too businesses started popping up all throughout downtown with groceries stores being amongst them such as J&J Grocery where Drury Lane meets Washington Boulevard; Eustace Bakery where Main Street intersects Ottawa Avenue; Henry Miller Clothing Store which opened along Washington Boulevard just east of today's Masonic Temple building now home to Eastern Market; Liquor store referred to locally as "Ned's" whose sign still hangs outside today's library across from downtown police station; First National Bank & Trust Company which opened November 12th 1850 across Congress Avenue from DeWitt Place - becoming America's second bank west of Detroit.; millinery store refers back historically most likely since 1830 when Anthony Potter established Potters Mill located now within walking distance directly southwest off US Highway I‑8 about two miles northeast of current day Harrison Heights Shopping Center.; pet supply store open since 1906 called simply "Pets" adjacent today's restaurant chain Dick'n Wings fame.; ice cream parlor open 1901 relocated inside original old Gratiot High School building now occupied primarily as tool storage space for various retail businesses including Joannes & Jane Antiques next door operated independently until 1984 when they became affiliated with larger contemporary Museum District display case opposite front window); Garment store open 1865 moved into new brickbuilding next door rear entrance facing Woodward Avenue bearing same name currently used as office/warehouse facility for several dozen small business owners adjacent today's Donnybrook Mall housing multiple high End boutiques plus several large Format department stores

By 1865, when it was renamed for General James Halleck east of Battle Creek on the Rouge River, East Pointe had grown to include a housesite on White Road and two frame buildings on Main Street. In 1871, George Waugh established Waugh’s Ford Creamery just east of town on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard; this became one of the largest creameries in Michigan and one of its most important economic engines until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1898-99, west side residents started erecting an artificial beach called "East Beach" after then-mayor Augustus Fenton (1892-93). The sand dunes that now line Red Bank Bay were created during this time as well... In 1903, Davenport Wheeler opened his store at 9th & Market Streets; this became Eastern Michigans first department store and remains so today as Eastern Michigan University's main shopping center along with several independent stores within walking distance including JCPenney (now Macy's), Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart (now Toys "R" Us), Payless Shoeshine & Supply Mouser Drug Store and many more since it merged with Sams Club several years ago... In 1915 when World War I began Europes Great War there were few people living near Battle Creek so many men enlisted to fight overseas without their families being able to join them they decided to build Camp Jerome near battle creek which was named after General John Pershing who died fighting WWI... After Prohibition ended in 1933 liquor regulations changed allowing more business development around town becoming an early leader in downtown redevelopment including new hotels such as Detroit Marriott Airport Hotel while others like VFW Post 705 moved into vacated industrial areas across town creating what is now called "The Loop". On October 14th 1953 when voters approved a 3 year tax abatement program providing $5 million dollars for infrastructure projects within town limits Devil's Den Golf Courseopened located adjacent to current day EASTPOINTE POLICE STATION
Eastpointe is a city in Michigan, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Livingston County. The land that would become Eastpointe was first settled by French and Indian traders in 1796. The first settler, Pierre Dugong, arrived in 1809 and named it after his patron saint, St. Augustine of Hippo. In 1830, the area was organized as a village under the name of "Eastpoint." By 1836, its population had reached 300 people and it became a town on July 1 of that year. On December 5 of that year, East Pointe became part of the newly formed Ulysses S Grant Territory when it was split from Oakland Township. In 1871–72, an act to create Oakland Township failed due to objections from residents who wanted more land for themselves instead of developing what they saw as an inspired plan by Director General George Stephenson to improve transportation between Detroit and Toronto via Lake Huron. Prior to this time there were no towns or villages within Livingston County other than Detroit proper; onlyOakland Township with its two villages stood out as areas with potential for growth. On November 24th 1870 (the day after Thanksgiving), voters in East Pointe approved a referendum proposing annexation into Oakland Township; this vote followed an earlier vote approving annexation into Wayne County which had taken place just minutes before in Lansing without any public notification or debate (the move effectively annexed Wayne County without input from East Pointe).
