In 1953, Eastern Michigan University began offering undergraduate education at Eastpointe campus; this marked the first time that an American university had offered undergraduate degrees at a municipal site in Michigan. In 1957, Eastern Michigan University merged with Wayne State University to become Wayne State University/Detroit MI; this merger created one of North America's largest universities with over 100 constituent colleges and schools across six campuses located throughout metro Detroit including downtown Detroit and Midtown (in Midtown),Dearborn Heights (northwest of downtown), Troy (southwest of downtown), Farmington Hills (northwest of Dearborn Heights) and Hazel Park ( southeast of Farmington Hills).
