The company built two miles of track between Sleeping Beauty Rapids and Sandusky as part of their effort to connect Detroit with points southward along the Ohio River. East Pointe saw its first commercial activity during this time when a ship called the Mayflower unloaded goods at anchor off shore on several occasions during her trip north from New England across Canada – including one occasion when goods cost $1 each! Although not recorded separately, these events likely occurred shortly after William Griggs established a whaling station at nearby Harbor Beach Naval Shipyard in 1824 which would become an important source of income for both communities. Eastpointe is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 33,977 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Eastpointe was John Pfeffer, who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on the now-defunct village of Beavercreek and named it after his adopted home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Other early settlers included Isaac Nolen and James Robertson. In 1839, Pfeffer married Martha Mason and they together founded the town of Eastpointe on land that they purchased from the Ottawa people near what is now Midtown Detroit. In 1847, Eastpointe had a population of about 20 residents; by 1850 it had grown to over 100 citizens. In 1865, voters passed an ordinance authorizing schoolteachers to open schools in Eastpointe; this provision became effective on April 1st that year and began to provide education for all children withinEast Pointe limits. The first post office opened at Eastpointe in 1868; it was renamed Albion in 1886 due to mail delivery being conducted through Albion Township (now Canfield Township) instead of through downtown Detroit during that time period because there were no streetcars available then). A Methodist church was built in 1870; it burned down three years later but served as the community's first fire hall until 1907 when an addition was made to serve as east side detention center for delinquent students until 1966 when those services were moved into nearby Grand Rapids campus buildings.)
