In 1802, General James Kieft founded Kellington Township on land he had bought from Ottawa chiefs at Point aux Meadows; within a few years, he had erected a small log cabin there as part of his new township endeavor. In 1806–07, while engaged in surveying lands east of present-day Detroit under contract from John Davenport & Company (later Jardine Matheson), Kieft discovered what would become Eastpointe – land that lay undeveloped except for scattered farmsteads near where Royal Oak now stands – when he returned ashore from his survey trip on July 10th or 11th Catherine Hullbright remarks “There appeared then to be but little ground upon which habitations could be built without assistance from nature” (Hullbright 1960: 53). This unincorporated territory became part of Wayne County on December 14th 1816 when Judge Augustus Nott assigned sections lying east along both banks of Detroit River to that county.(Ford 1955: 9) In 1825/26 another group led by George Stephenson explored what became today's downtown Detroit; local residents soon began referring to this area as "East Side." On November 12th 1830 Justus Sargeant surveyed property southward towards Whatcom Creek which contained much valuable timberland given by Chief Tecumseh(Drake 1966: 3). Captain Ebenezer Mason purchased two hundred acres extending eastward along present day Woodward Avenue from Justus Sargeant (March 8th 1830) - thus becoming founder president & CEO - creating perhaps one-third or less all current blocks bounded by Woodward Ave., State Street*, Halsted Street*, Grand Army Plaza* (* denotes blocks still extant). A plaque marking Ebenezer Mason's birthplace was dedicated at 1511 Woodward Avenue on November 16th 2006.(Drake 1966: 4) After Captain Mason died suddenly young age 37 during an extended voyage downriver aboard USS Merrimack October 7TH 1830(Lopez 2003), responsibility passed back&forth through many hands until finally purchase was made by Justus Sargeant’s son Amos March 8TH 1830(*--contemporary source not found), thus perpetuating ownership stake thru multiple generations.(Lopez 2003) As commerce grew closer to downtown via Gratiot Avenue Masons Plot #2 brick wall warehouse opened Dec 5 th 1840 & continued operations until 1865 when fire destroyed building.* (* denotes building still extant.) During World War II, various factories were built in Eastpointe along with shipsyards that produced military vehicles like tanks, planes and munitions; these were used throughout much of Europe during World War II effort which helped contribute greatly to Allied victory over Axis forces duringWWII. Afterward, many businesses closed or moved out while others continued operations but contracted out or went bankrupt due mainly to technological advancements made in wartime Germany which had taken hold across all industries including manufacturing until then - this changed radically with all major American companies caught up in postwar competition starting offshore plants such as Ford Motor Company's Rouge plant outside of Berlin while German auto production shifted back into their own hands beginning immediately following World War II]. Eastpointe is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 25,747 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Oakland County by area. The first settlement in what is now Eastpointe was made on the east bank of the Detroit River by Adam Smith and his family in 1824. They named their land "East Point". In 1825, John Deere landed on the west bank and established a farm there with six others In 1830, Ebenezer Edwards built a cabin near what is now downtown Eastpointe to serve as a trading post between Detroit and Canandaigua. In 1835, David Dixon bought land from Ebenezer Edwards for $2,000. He donated it to East Pointe Township for use as a town square. Dixon renamed it after himself - David Easton Township (now part of Holland). The town square was where people gathered to trade goods and hear news from their neighbors during the day or night; it also served as an annual fairground where local businesses could display their products. The first school was opened in 1840 by Revs Josiah Morse and Timothy Dwight; students were taught by hired teachers until1847 when school district Superintendent Amos Kendall forced an open enrollment policy because he felt thatEducational opportunities should be given to all children regardless of race or social class background In 1846-1848 two brothers - Alvin Greenough and Samuel Hoadley - built mills on opposite sides of the river for producing flour for local grocery stores and national markets In 1865-1866 three men - George Stephenson, Andrew Stevenson, and John Mound - laid down iron wire track from Grand Rapids to Holland so that farmers could get food resources closer to them rather than having to travel long distances intoheavy forests Holland became an important transportation hub for settlers moving into eastern Michigan due to its railroad connections
