The university continued to grow and expand throughout the years and by 1990 had reached its current size on both sides of Mackinac Bridge: on the north side east of downtown and on the south side west of downtown (now known as Old Main Campus). At that time, it also became one of only four American universities to ever have both an undergraduate student body (made up mostlyof students from out-of-state) and an undergraduate research program accredited by AAAS/ North Atlantic Section(now IZA). During World War II, many soldiers from East Lansing served in military camps located near Shiawassee River between Battle Creek and Saginaw; some were even drafted into service there. During postwar years many residents left for jobs outside town due to declines in manufacturing activity along Michigans’s central border region following World War II – which led to changes not just inside but also outside town itself with increased trafficrelated pollution problems caused by automotive manufacturing plants located nearby on Woodward Avenue between State Street and Midland Boulevard; this prompted then-Mayor James Kelley to call for a study looking at ways to reduce automotive emissions within town limits while preserving any possible economic development potential resulting from those emissions reductions. That study’s findings were published as “Emissions Reduction Options for Cadillac City” which Kittrell developed into his successful Mayor Kelley Plan for Reducing Emissions from Motor Vehicles which has been implemented since 1977 including Phase 1 operations starting in 1982 over 2 square miles adjacent to Eastern Market Place ~ now Downtown eastside~ . Today all major automakers operating vehicle production plants are headquartered or have significant operations presence here : Ford (~60% employment), GM (~25%), Chrysler (~15%),Volkswagen (~10%) etc.). With its annexation into Prussia following World War I, eastMichigan fell back into German hands until 1919 when it reverted to American control following the Treaty of Trianon which ended World War I. In 1925, then-Senator Joseph McCarthy visited eastMichigan to canvass support for his presidential campaign against Harry S Truman; he later charged that Truman had ties to communist sympathizers ineastMichigan and elsewhere in what came to be known as McCarthyism.
