On October 15th 1796 James Kapp purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) west of present day State Street from Nicholas Czarnecki for $5 per acre (2 ha). With this purchase Kapp laid out what would become today's downtownEast Lansing around an intersection formed by Kapp Boulevard (north), Third Street (east), Gratiot Avenue (southwest), and Union Road/State Highway 7 southeast (west). In 1824 James Kapp donated another tract south of present-day State Street to make up for lost territory acquired during previous campaigns against Chief Joseph Brant's band in that area northeast of Ionia Heights Road/Route No. 506.. On February 24th 1825 Hernando De Soto discovered new land comprising about 2 square miles (.8 km²) on the eastern side of town along Whatcom Creek where he named it after his personal exploration party leader Manuel de la Vega y Arellano who had accompanied him on his trip across North America: Casa de las Americas (). After years(?)of survey work done byLieutenant Colonel John Paulding & Captain Samuel Morse & assistants plus further surveys made during Pequot War era by Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Fowke & Major Whitehead etc., possession finally transferred December 10th 1830 from Captain John Morse’s Company “Conductors” (& others) @ presidio (@ east end): Elisha Bartlett surveyed township lots 3rd June 1830[Elisha?] – 8th Nov 1840[John?]– has corner stone marks [?].[NOTE: Bartlett moved] It should be noted that while much effort went into mapping out East Lansing Township its creation remains largely undocumented - likely because only surface evidence exists documenting platting or land donations even though township boundaries were formally defined several times throughout their history ..... By 1860, East Lansing had reached its peak as an industrial center with over 30 companies operating in various industries including shipbuilding, baking bread, textiles, brewing beer and papermaking. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), East Lansing experienced heavy military activity which caused significant damage to the city's infrastructure. As a result of this violence and destruction, many businesses shut down or moved out of town while also displacing many local residents. In 1865, after much reconstruction work had been completed in downtown East Lansing thanks to donations from individuals and organizations such as The Alumni Association (a group which helped support education within local communities), municipal government reorganized into wards which provided better representation for citizensry within their neighbourhoods. Additionally, starting in 1898,[1]East Lansing began annexing neighbouring townships creating what is now its metropolitan area with a population exceeding 1 million people today!
