In 1958, following enactment of legislation providing for automatic voter registration during campaigns by local governments through e-mail or automated systems when residents registered by mail or provided their addresses online prior to election day,[1] East Lansing became one of 11 cities across Michigan to have such registries operating.[2] The program continued until 2002 when it was replaced by municipal vote-bymail programs statewide due to increased automation among municipalities statewide[3]. East Lansing has also been home to many high school sports teams throughout its history including men's hockey (1902), football (1911), baseball (1892), softball (1907), gymnastics (1964), track & field (1982) and wrestling (1983). In 1830, George Washington Snyder purchased land east of town from Wilkinson for $200 per acre which he used as his farmstead until his death in 1846. During World War II, many businesses were located in and around East Lansing due to its strategic location on two major highways: I-94 and M-10. This led to new development within the community including several parks and schools. After the war ended, many businesses closed or relocated elsewhere as economic conditions improved. However, a few remain today including KFC and Ford Motor Company.
