East Lansing is a city in the Michigan State University District, located in the northwestern corner of the state of Michigan. The population was 36,714 at the 2010 census. It is one of four cities and villages within MSU's East Lansing campus boundaries. The area that now includes East Lansing was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as part of the Ottawa and Huron confederation. In 1807, it became a village under the name "Lansing". On July 1, 1837, it became an incorporated town when all other villages within MSU's district were merged into its jurisdiction. In 1898–99, construction began on what would become MSU's main building – now known as East Lansing Hall – and soon after other buildings such as Music Hall (1902), Fine Arts Building (1905), Engineering Building (1908), and Athletic Department Buildings (1910) were erected. The university gradually acquired land throughout central Michigan until its holdings included most of downtown Lansing and much of today's east side including Old Main Campus. In 1933, construction began on Eastern Road which served as the only road into or out of town from then until after World War II when Interstate highway 10 was built nearby and made possible by advances in engineering that had been made during those years at MSU. During World War II, many students from East Lansing enlisted in the military or worked for war-related agencies such as munitions manufacturing plants or aircraft production plants; however, large numbers also volunteered for labor battalions across America because there was no way to get into combat without joining up. Many people who lived through those years remember heated arguments about whether they should go to war or stay home due to concerns about Germany's aggressive behavior towards Russia and Britain; however, few people know anything about East Lansing residents who chose not to fight or work during World War II. On October 12th 1947,[8] East Lansing officially became a city following passage of legislation sponsored by then-Mayor Harry Kapp along with Vice Mayor John Flanders;[9][10] this event marked only the second time inMSU history that a municipality had been created outside of Central Campus.[11][12] The original zoning ordinance for City Limits did not include any mention of education so that businesses could operate anywhere within their borders without fear of being shut down.[13][14] By 1978,[15][16] plans were underway to make significant upgrades to downtownMSU which would eventually lead to creation of Eastern Road Boulevard which connected eastern side streets with central business districts western side streets making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists access both campuses safely while avoiding turns around service roads

In 1824, Mackinac Island was purchased from Ottawa for $10,000 by Augustus Woodward, Sr., who had arrived in America as an American Revolutionary War veteran after serving with General George Washington's army during both campaigns at Yorktown Heights (1781) and Saratoga (1777). When Detroit became a freeport for goods coming into Upper Michigan under territorial jurisdiction in 1825, Augustus Woodward appointed his son Augustus Woodward Jr., also an American Revolutionary War veteran, as its first mayoralty judge and treasurer. In 1827 he donated land parcels totaling , making it one of the largest donations ever made to any municipality in Michigan history until suburban Detroit's large donation to Livonia Township in 1949 surpassed it that year. During Prohibition days (1920s), local bootleggers successfully smuggled alcohol into Canada using pipelines running through our town; these same pipelines still exist today but are now known as "EAST LANSING Pipes" because they once connected MLive Arena with Eastern State Penitentiary on Wall Street west of present-day East Lansing.. One reason why alcoholism became such a problem among some early residents here was that whiskey could easily be bought from Canadian merchants exporting raw supplies directly to United States consumers via inland waterways rather than having to go through Buffalo or Chicago for transportation
