East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Washtenaw County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 85,902. The city is located on the shores of Lake Mackinac, about 30 miles southwest of Detroit and 50 miles northeast of Ann Arbor. It lies at the intersection of I-75 and US-26. The first Europeans to visit East Lansing were French traders in 1699 who named it "Lansing". In 1701, Indian settlements were established near what is now downtown East Lansing by Ottawa scouts commanded by Pontiac's son Ignace de la Salle. The area around today's Capitol Campus served as an Indian village until about 1800 when white settlers began arriving from nearby Shiawassee Township and other areas in western Michigan. In 1807, during the Mexican–American War (1810–1812), General Winfield Scott's army passed through East Lansing on their way to Battle Creek against Mexico; they burned some villages before reaching Mackinac Island where they destroyed infrastructure including mills and churches before retreating back upriver to Fort Dearborn beyond present-day Detroit. In 1827, when Territorial Governor John Cavanaugh appointed George Hennepin as agent for Indian affairs in Michigania, he decided to move eastward from Grand Rapids because he disliked Grand Rapids' large number of Native Americans living among them without supervision or reservation rights—a situation that was only beginning to change elsewhere in North America at that time due to treaties signed with Spain and France following independence from those countries. On his recommendation, Hennepin transferred most of the Potawatomi Indians living near Grand Rapids south into what became Washtenaw County while also creating a reserve for them east of Main Street between Huron River and Negaunee River known as "Mackinac Point". This Reserve formed part of what is now East Lansing Township until it was merged with Washtenaw County in 1908; it remains unincorporated territory within East Lansing today though there are several parcels within its boundaries used for urban purposes such as land used for policing or open space like Roosevelt Park which contains a botanical garden operated by multiple agencies including NASA; all are administered by Washtenaw County government through various planning agencies headed by an elected commission called the Planning Board which has authority over land use along with zoning laws related thereto A new courthouse opened on State Street just north of Capitol Campus in 1899 after being built using $5 million raised through local taxes levied on alcohol sales repealed after that year due to Prohibition Laws set into effect by President Grover Cleveland which aimed at suppressing drinking rather than helping farmers ). A high school mascot since 1903 has been "The Wolverines" (derived from University Residence Hall where many students resided). In 1907–1908 two new universities were founded: Eastern Michigan University (now part of Midwestern University) on Mt Pleasant Avenue between Woodward Avenue and Beemer Road west side Extension east side Extension then WesternMichigan University (now Wayne State University) off Gratiot Avenue between Oakland Boulevard and Washington Boulevard both sides Extension . In 1908 eastern half was annexed into Oakland Township while western half became Kalamazoo
