East Lansing is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 54,362 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern border of Lansing Township and School District No. 2. East Lansing straddles the Grand River, just east of its confluence with the Muskegon River. The area now known as East Lansing was first settled by English colonists in 1796. In 1817, a group of missionaries led by Father Joseph Bourgeois arrived in what is now East Lansing and founded Sts. John’s Catholic Church and College (now Michigan State University). Lansing Township was organized in 1824 and named for George Augustus Eaton, Governor of Michigan during the War of 1812. It consisted of land lying east of Bay Street on both sides of the Grand River between Brush Creek and I-94 (the present-day boundaries between Livingston Township to the north and Ottawa County to the south). In 1836, part of East Lansing was taken from Livingston Township to form School District No. 1 which served parts of Ottawa County before being annexed into Lansing Township in 1840. In 1850, when school districts were created within each county, School District No 3 (East Lansing) formed from portions of Ottawa County units that had been annexed into other townships: Brush Creek included parts of Gratiot Township (northwest side), Clinton Township (southwest side), Ionia Heights/Ionia Hills/Isabella Heights Townships (east side), Midland Park/Midvale Park Townships (northwest side), Saline Valley Village(northeast side) and Washington Twp./Wenlock Twp./ Winnebago Twp.(southwest side). As part as part-time education services for settlers near Detroit who could not afford college or graduate level courses offered by local universities – district graduates continued to attend these schools until they became full-time university students or residents after 1830; these areas are today known as “Detroit technical suburbs” After years without an adequate water source due to various disputes over ownership among different landowners within district boundaries, trustees voted on February 25th 1865 to build what would become Washtenaw Lake according to a resolution passed earlier that day byTrustees trying unsuccessfully since 1862 to secure appropriations for such a project from then Governor John Acheson District Hallrives opened January 1st 1870 featuring grandstands facing Washtenaw Avenue with no seating but instead open stands around four walls giving spectators views along fourth wall looking out over Straightaway Pond across canal towards old home site east facing road 100 feet wide built at same time as tracks leading into new riverfront park now east end street park running along canal

In 1923, the City Council decided to rename itself East Lansing after then-Vice President Calvin Coolidge because he had played a major role in helping promote growth in that area during his time as Governor of Massachusetts.
