In 1865, when East Lansing became a village due to an act passed by the state legislature, it had a total population of just under 100 people; today it has over 2600 residents including 4000 students at EMU! During World War II, many men from East Lansing enlisted or served within THE UNITED STATES ARMY or WEST VIRGINIA REGIMENT - many working their entire careers right here at EMU! Many graduates have gone on to make significant contributions both locally and nationally! Some notable alumni include: Lt.-Colonel George Hargrave (USMC), Rear Admiral Donald Sutherland (USN), Ambassador Richard Moggins (UK), Lieutenant Colonel Robert Aiken (USAF) and Rear Admiral Harry Harris Jr.(USN).
