East Lansing was founded in 1824 by John Snyder and his brother, George. The city developed rapidly due to its location on the southern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 1849, East Lansing became a county seat of Wayne County. In 1865, the Michigan Legislature moved the county seat from East Lansing to Marquette because of crowded population growth in the town of East Lansing. In 1907, East Lansing enacted a law that banned discrimination against any race or gender in business transactions. The law was repealed in 1951 after complaints from businesses. In 1932, the city erected a monumental statue of George Washington at Fairview Park as part of itsicentennial celebration. The statue has been replaced every ten years since then.
